[Review] “World Destruction” – Dreadsquad & Blackout JA (Superfly Studio)

[Review] “World Destruction” – Dreadsquad & Blackout JA (Superfly Studio)

SF032 - artwork - world destruction (1000x1000)Polish talented producer Marek Bogdański aka Dreadsquad and Jamaican charismatic vocalist Blackout JA met at Uprising Festival in Slovakia and decided to spend a week writing and recording to produce what is now the main body of ‘World Destruction’. We’ve had a sneak preview of what to expect thanks to singles “Last Tune” and “A Girl Like You” (http://dubmassive.org/en/12137/new-dub-releases-from-dreadsquad).

The full album brings us best of the duo with an eclectic set of tunes varying from steady, moody reggae in “Innocent Persecution” or “Take My Love”  to a crazy steppers with a wild horns section like mentioned “Last Tune”. Between these we get what is Dreadsquad’s strong suit – a mixture of modern low-bass music, raggamuffin, rub-a-dub and dancehall vibes in “Drop The Bassline”, “Dance Fi Mi” or “Sound System”. The overall combination shows how flexible and talented are both producer and vocalist. Blackout JA can easily suit his very strong voice even into lovers vibes without losing his “harsh” uniqueness. All riddims produced by Dreadsquad sound very soft and especially in old-school tracks they have this smooth and warm flavour – but watching Marek’s activity about equipment on Facebook this is not surprising for me.

Supplementary to main album, a separate one with versions is also available.

[Review] Dub Conductor – “World Cry” / “Hunting Warrior”

[Review] Dub Conductor – “World Cry” / “Hunting Warrior”

DCM007-Web-Image_Side-A-The seventh release from Dub Conductor brings us two solid tunes. On the A side we get very energetic riddim with a pumping bassline and charismatic vocals of Blackout Ja. Thanks to nice, mild melodica’s chords and drums part the tune gets cool rootical flavour. The B side is for all lovers of raw, massive dub – “Hunting Warrior” is a digital, instrumental steppers based on synth-like sounds, ruff&tuff style.

Digi.Signa – “Rasta Takeover” / “Murda We Charge”

Digi.Signa – “Rasta Takeover” / “Murda We Charge”

rastaTo its release number 20, Digi.Signa invited Vibronics to cooperation again (http://dubmassive.org/en/9928/u-roydaddy-spencer-remixed-by-vibronics-and-zion-train-segnale-digitale). On the vocals we get Anthony Johnson, who in a great, charismatic style – by singing and declamation – raises this nice, rockin’ riddim yet higher . Apart from a “regular” dub version we get also a special mix called “Vibronics Future Dub” and a very interesting, slow original version.

Listen: http://segnaledigitale.org/dev/en/albums/digi-signa-020

murdaThe release number 21 presents two dynamic singers – Blackout Ja and Turbulence. They flow on the riddim originally produced in reggae style; here it is tuned-up by such specialists like Neil Perch from Zion Train and Numa Crew (jungle version). All of this together makes very energetic mix.

Another very good releases from Digi.Signa!

2×12” from Digi.Signa

2×12” from Digi.Signa

MURRAY-DEF-e1432063206553BLACKOUT-A-JUNGLEWhen I receive information about new Digi.Signa releases I listen to it as soon as possible and it never disappoints me (http://dubmassive.org/en/search/digi+signa ). My joy is doubled now as the label gave us two 12″‘s, the first one in a heavy dub style produced by Murray Man and Zion Train and the second one in a jungle style, but with some dub accents. Murray Man sings ‘Blazing Fire’ on a heavy rhythm, remixed by Perch who created one of the best Zion Train riddims alongside the horns crew. The other one is a heavy jungle hit with vocals by Blackout JA and a stepper killer remix by Numa Crew –  extraordinarily powerful!

Mungo’s Hi Fi new releases with Charlie P, Blackout JA, Mr Williamz

Mungo’s Hi Fi are very active. Soon after great albums with remixes (http://dubmassive.org/tag/mungos-hi-fi) they present another releases.

SCOBLP005_back_500We will start from a LP, where the crew meets excellent ragamuffin and sound system warrior – Charlie P. After plenty of singles and collaborations the time for a full release has come for this young and talented vocalist, who has started his musical journey when he was a kid.

This showcase presents both Mungo’s and Charlie P from their best side. Classic and modern reggae/dancehall vibes, future bass sounds and dubstep rhythms, all combined with singing, deejaying, fast chatting. Fire on the dancefloors guaranteed.

Bababoom Hi Fi Sound System – “Skylarking Riddim”

Bababoom Hi Fi Sound System – “Skylarking Riddim”

COVER FRONTItaly has a pretty good position on the dub scene, but a fact is that Italian releases appear a bit rarely, so it’s even more joyful for us to introduce new 12” by Bababoom Hi Fi from Naples, who are present for 10 years on the sound system scene. In 2013 they started their own label and released another 12” “Rumors” with Jules and amazing Dennis Alcapone. This time we get a solid dose of roots sounds that refer a hit named “Skylarking” performed by The Roots Defender – an Italian top backing band. On the A side we can hear Kojo Neatness on vocals – he comes from Kingston and has already appeared i.a. on Dreadsquad productions. Bush Chemist is responsible for the dub version and at the end of the side there are the incredible Ital Horns and their version, as always on a really high level. Side B contains Blackout JA, who reminds me of Buju Banton (what is a big plus), we also get dubplate mix and a version by Dougie – so different than the one on the A side: there is more space, echo and reverbs. This release confirms that it’s worth to follow the Italian, big sound system scene.
