[Review] Trigram Six: Musai Soundworks – “Hoinar” / Alpha Steppa – “Ro Heath” (Steppas Records)

Alpha Steppa, who has already announced his next LP, in the meantime continues the Trigram series with tribal bass music.

Taoists believe that there are two opposing yet complementary forces in the natural world: yin and yang. Many natural dualities such as male and female, light and dark, high and low, hot and cold, water and fire and life and death are thought of as physical manifestations of the yin- yang concept. This ancient Eastern paradigm parallels the concept in modern physics of positive and negative forces creating the proton, the electron and the neutron. The Eight Trigrams of Steppas Records derive their inspiration from the ancient Book of Changes (The I-Ching), which states that the forces of yin and yang create the eight primordial features of the universe represented by the Eight Trigrams. Each Trigram is depicted as a symbol comprised of three lines, a straight line symbolises yang and a broken line symbolises yin. These eight symbols are representations of all naturally occurring processes, they represent movement and change. The Eight Trigrams of Steppas Records are an interpretation of the ever changing, myriad sounds of the universe: Forward thinking bass music with a deep roots foundation.

This is the idea behind the series and from the very beginning, it explores a vast universe of sounds; from one side connected to a mystical, tribal spirit, but delivered through modern musical forms on the other side and this is exactly what  Romanian artists Musai Soundworks and Alpha Steppa are doing on this release. Deep vibes derived from genres you know, but with a big part of raw, mysterious force.

[Review] Aketi Ray Meets Alpha & Omega (Steppas Records)

[Review] Aketi Ray Meets Alpha & Omega (Steppas Records)

We’ve experienced many extraordinary dub-influenced musical connections thanks to Steppas Records and the new release increases this pool. Sophisticated and artistic dub created by 7-piece band Aketi Ray brings a superb connection between dub and jazz – we can follow the rhythm of the bassline and drums (wonderful sound!) and get into rich and moody melodies of the piano or horns. The versions provided by Alpha & Omega hold the overall mood of this release and the band couldn’t choose a better artist to create remixes. By the way, the mood of this release catches me each time I’m listening to it and, for me, makes this music so amazing. Gloomy and restless, like hiding some unspoken, dangerous truth hidden somewhere in the fog of sounds.

Finally! This track has hit me strong when I was listening debut album by Alpha Steppa. Brazilian singer I-Sarana with her majestic vocal and lyrics on a wonderful, rich riddim with blazing horns. On the release we have previously unreleased versions and additional two heavyweight remixes by Sao Paulo’s High Public Sound. Tune!

[Review] Sista Habesha & Sistah Awa – “Jah Voice” (Steppas Records)

[Review] Sista Habesha & Sistah Awa – “Jah Voice” (Steppas Records)

as7004_a_inbagThe latest release from Steppas Records take a direction into more rootical area. Very talented Italian producer Sista Habesha prepared a dynamic steppers with wonderful, rich sound (these horns and organs!!). The tempo is just accurate to set fire on the dancefloor. This roots & culture killer is voiced by Sista Awa with very spiritual lyrics.

Vibes!

Moonshine Steppas – “Inna Zion”

Moonshine Steppas – “Inna Zion”

mss003_frontIt’s been 4 years since the last Moonshine Steppas’ big release with top-a-top artists (http://dubmassive.org/4161/dubowa-kolaboracja-moonshine-steppas). But the joined forces of  Moonshine Recordings and Steppas Records returns with another great release. We get the track “Inna Zion”, created by Vibration Lab with roots legend Linval Thompson, in several different flavours. The concept is quite interesting – each artist first presents a dub version and the a remix. The original one is a nice and moody reggae tune, stressed mainly in the middle part – melodic key chords guide us the whole time. Then Dub Dynasty shifts it into a hypnotizing, earthshaking steppers in their unique and recognisable style. On the B side the musical journey begins with RSD, who turns into more raw drum&bass vibe with massive horns snippets. Finally Jstar presents heavy digital vibes inna dubstep flavour with nice synth part.

I guess I don’t have to mention about low frequencies – you know what to expect from these artists and you can turn up the subwoofers before listening.

Crazy Hertz – “Material Things” (Steppas Records)

Crazy Hertz – “Material Things” (Steppas Records)

AS7002-inbag-ASteppas Records label brings us another talented producer on its 7” release. Crazy Hertz is an Italian artist and presents us a deep, slow but seriously heavy and rolling riddim full of dub. Vocally supported by a great voice of Jane Warriah, with a important message about material world, this tune flows through the speakers massively and knocks to our minds.

Steppas Records – “Monsoon Come/Contraception”

Steppas Records – “Monsoon Come/Contraception”

AS1215-Art-(A)After having some troubles with neighbours Steppas Studio gives us next 12” with the retake of thundering “Monsoon Come”. The track remixed by Cranky General & Dutty Hands now get an excellent, rootical flavour a with a magic melodica flowing through the riddim. Previously played as a dubplate, now is available for everyone.

On the B side we have a powerful track by Zentash Gigawatt, known from the previous Trigram release. A deep and tribal riddim carries serious, responsible message from Ras Tinny about contraception and his voice perfectly matches this vibe. This is the second release with Zentash in Steppas Records and I’m definitely waiting for more!

Trigram Four – Zentash Gigawatt (Steppas Records)

TRIGRAM04The 4th part of Trigram series is out now. Dedicated to extraordinary dub music this time takes us to deep, tribal valley filled with wild drumming and beautiful ethno-influenced melodies. The trance mood is doubled by a powerful bassline. The second version is enriched in some vocal snippets and additional instruments. In a word: a rough&tough journey to mystical lands.

The tracks are made by Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Zentash Gigawatt, who is debuting in Steppas Records with this release.
