[Review] Rootical Attack Allstars & Dixie Peach – Showcase

[Review] Rootical Attack Allstars & Dixie Peach – Showcase

A French label Rootical Attack has surprised me once more with the conception of this album – a showcase, where they test a legendary singer Dixie Peach on the productions prepared by label’s team – Tozer, Peah, Mr. Zebre and Alex Sci-Fi. Dixie is a well known name, a member of Jah Tubbys Sound System crew and on this record he shows his skills and beautifully flows on juicy &  heavyweight tunes in a soundsystem style, prepared by the crew.

A highly recommended 12”!

[Review] Radikal Guru – “Dub Mentalist” (Moonshine Recordings)

[Review] Radikal Guru – “Dub Mentalist” (Moonshine Recordings)

Undoubtedly, the brand of Mateusz Miller known as Radikal Guru is world’s top class. There aren’t too many Polish producers that tour around the whole world and yet he has visited USA, Mexico, RSA and all of the Europe, proving the quality. The news about incoming third album was optimistic not just for reggae fans, but for bass music fans in general. Previously he has released two well-received albums – ‘The Rootstepa’ (2011) and ‘Subconscious’ (2013). There were also regularly appearing singles, all of it signed by Tricity based Moonshine Recordings.

The third LP named “Dub Mentalist” saw the light of day on 11.11 and it has coincided with the time Radikal Guru toured around Poland with a brass trio and vocalists Echo Ranks and Ciann Finn joining chosen events. What’s ‘Dub Mentalist’ like? It’s more mature and well-considered for sure. It’s fresh, it respects the roots, heavyweight bass fans will find their joy as well.

Before launching the album I suggest turning up the subwoofers, listening to it without bass doesn’t make any sense. It’s opened by a deep ‘Mentalist’, instantly reminding of his previous works. A solid instrumental tune, one of six on the album, the remaining four are tracks with vocalists. The second track is very catchy ‘Build Fire’ with NY-based Jay Spaker known from playing guitar and singing in John Brown’s Body group. It certainly has chances to become a hit of bass sessions.

Radikal Guru expertly builds the album’s dynamics. ‘Vengeance’ is dedicated to low frequency fans. Once again, bass and fx extend to the fore in this deeply grooving tune. Echo Ranks is the next guest on the album and the track “Raggamuffin Souljah’ is a real dance floor killer. After the vocal track we get another solid instrumental tune ‘Zen Dub’, the concept works out perfectly. Solo Banton, heard in ‘Back Off’ is a big character on the British dub scene. A crazy bass with computer samples is another gift for the dubstep heads. ‘Desert Flower’ is one of the tunes that became my favs right after the first playback. A beautiful, meditational dub containing violin played by Violinbwoy – a producer and musician coming from Wrocław. If you look for more guests, the next one is British reggae veteran Earl 16. ‘Move Along’ is a great connection of conscious rootical message with the modern dub, smoothly mixed with Earl’s vocals. Any ‘Star Wars’ fans reading this? If so, you will certainly be delighted with ‘Empire Dub’ being nothing else than a dub attack performed by the bass empire. A might bass flows out of the speakers just like Darth Vader’s fleet attacking with sinister force. At the end we get ‘Halfmoon Dub’, a very calm ‘Dub Mentalist’ journey closure.

I’m sure that the album will please both calm, meditational dub lovers and the ones that love big bass killers. Sit down, relax, launch your subwoofers and dive into the dub reality of Radikal Guru.

[Review] Dubble – “Signs of The Time” [Dub Tunnel Records]

[Review] Dubble – “Signs of The Time” [Dub Tunnel Records]

dtr004_0

It’s 4th release by the Croatians from Dubble, this time vocally backed up by recently very active Earl 16. The A side is owned by him – in ‘Signs of The Time’ his voice, on a heavy steppers rhythm with a lot of electronics, brings up a meditational mood and doesn’t let you forget important matters. The dub version is a great display of Dubble duo great FX abilities, also proved by B side and ‘Hurachi’, where inconspicuous brass instruments cause shivers and the deep bass alongside dark atmosphere create a soundsystem killer with a non-trivial dub version.

I hope they keep it up and please us with more music!

[Review] Brother Culture & Paul Fox – “Heartical Connection”

[Review] Brother Culture & Paul Fox – “Heartical Connection”

hcA duo of two great soundsystem characters presenting two different vocal schools – one of them is a great chatter who surprises every time and the second one is an oasis of peace and melodiousness above all. You can admire the effect of their clash on the ‘Heartical Connection’. Music and dub versions are created by Paul Fox, who also recorded keys and melodica. Gavin ‘Fullness’ Sant rules the drums, Jahman Dan played congos and Ben Goddard is responsible for the guitars. Vocally it’s all Brother Culture chatting on at his best, proven in meditational ‘Ital Sounds’, or slightly digitally-dancehall’ish ‘One Tonight’, ‘Seat of God’. In the moody roots track ‘Good Time’ moves on to singing, creating a great harmony with Paul’s voice, whereas ‘Mixed Message’ and ‘Organic Life’ picture his expressiveness very well. The soft, harmonic voice of Paul requires a mention as well, ‘Critical Dimension’ reminds me of his tunes with Alpha&Omega a lot. He brings the mood to every tune, though.

[Review] I-Skankers – “In His Name” (I-Skankers Records)

[Review] I-Skankers – “In His Name” (I-Skankers Records)

Adobe Photoshop PDF

‘In His Name’ is the 3rd I-Skankers release at their own label, excluding 7 dubplates released on their own. This time we get a riddim with Ranking Fox and Anthony Fox ruling the vocals on A side, which is topped out by an UK roots style dub version with nyahbhingi elements. B side contains isntrumentalists performances – Yanna Sax on the sax, Steppin Pablo on melodica and another strong dub version.

I-Skankers went for roots here and they did it really well!

[Review] “Musical Order” / “Rocking Time” / “To The max!” / “Dub Order” (Forward Fever Recordings)

[Review] “Musical Order” / “Rocking Time” / “To The max!” / “Dub Order” (Forward Fever Recordings)

forwardAfter many great releases and co-operations, Belgian Forward Fever decided to launch their own label Forward Fever Recordings and release this “debut” 12”. As they wrote:

“This release is a special livication to all soundman and woman who inspired us over the years! All singers & players, all promotors pushing the roots and culture vibes and everyone supporting soundsystem culture!”

The release comes with one riddim with 3 vocal versions and 1 dub. Idren Natural, Ras Cloud, Ion One and Rudy Roots are praising what we love to the max – sound system culture, music and the message it delivers. The riddim maintains the high level we are used to from previous Forward Fever’s productions – rich sound, beautifully arranged compositons with warm horns and bass.

Another top release!

[Review] Sista Habesha & Sistah Awa – “Jah Voice” (Steppas Records)

[Review] Sista Habesha & Sistah Awa – “Jah Voice” (Steppas Records)

as7004_a_inbagThe latest release from Steppas Records take a direction into more rootical area. Very talented Italian producer Sista Habesha prepared a dynamic steppers with wonderful, rich sound (these horns and organs!!). The tempo is just accurate to set fire on the dancefloor. This roots & culture killer is voiced by Sista Awa with very spiritual lyrics.

Vibes!

[Review] Scotch Bonnet Records Presents

[Review] Scotch Bonnet Records Presents

Always active Mungo’s Hi-Fi has recently released a lot of good stuff. Starting from a new Scrub a Dub 7” we’re diving into dubstep area. Von D presents a deep and mystical tune with crucial words about analog vs digital sound [holy words for all purists ;)] perfectly mixed into the track. On the flip side we have Egoless with a ruff beat. A heavy&dark release, for true sub frequencies lovers.

Next 7” brings a modern, punchy, bass style ragga from Danny T & Tradesman and Parly B.

The last 7” is a wonderful, vintage relick of 1988 production by Naturally “Sunny Gets Blue”. Made by Stalawa and released in this French producer’s own label Foreign Mind, the track comes with great vocals by London MC Dark Angel.

This 7” is distributed by Scotch Bonnet Records.

Last but not least – a full length album, a compilation of various artists that have influenced Mungo’s Hi-Fi. Some tracks released, some dubplates, some new ones – but all highly energetic and full of vibe. If you love all kind of reggae flavors and how this music impacts modern producers, then you will love this album – from an excellent “Das Model” dub by Prince Fatty, trough rub-a-dub and old-school vibes like Stalawa’s “Buss Shot” and Naram’s “Golden Rule”, ending on murderous versions (“Dub Controller”!) and heavy pumping riddims like “Dub Invasion”. This is highly powerful stuff with energizing effect proven – I usually listen to LPs during long running and I ran almost 30 minutes extra just rewinding some tunes again and again…
