H.I.M Coronation Dance – Aba Shanti-I x King Earthquake // 01.11.2014 // Leicester

aba leicester pos— H.I.M CORONATION DANCE —

w/ ABA SHANTI-I x KING EARTHQUAKE

One of the most important events in the RasTafarian calendar is the Anniversary of the Coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie I. This event took place on the 2nd November 1930.
His Imperial Majesty broke with tradition by delaying the ceremony for some time after the death of the previous ruler, Queen Zawditu.

The reasons for this are described by His Majesty in His autobiography:

“On the 17th Maskaram 1909 (27th September 1916) I was chosen heir to throne and regent, with Queen Zawditu occupying the throne; and when I had patiently carried out the work of government, for fourteen years, in my office of regent plenipotentiary, Queen Zawditu died on 24th Magabit 1922 ( 2nd April 1930) and, consequently, on the morrow I was proclaimed Emperor and assumed the throne.
“As regards the succession to throne and crown, we have read in history that, at a time when Ethiopia lived in isolation and before she had established relations with foreign countries, the prevailing custom had been, at the demise of the Emperor, for his death often to remain carefully unannounced. They would then place his son and heir on the throne and crown him immediately that very day. Only after the son’s reign and coronation had been announced by proclamation, would they give a ceremonial burial to the dead King.

“At other times, at the demise of the Emperor, the officers of the royal household would take him clandestinely and bury him, before anyone could hear about it, and on the morrow they would place his son and heir on the throne; after they had conducted the royal installation service and crowned him, the death of the father and the new reign of the son would be announced by proclamation at the same time.
But now that Ithiopia had concluded treaties of commerce and friendship with twelve foreign governments, had entered the League of Nations, and had established firm friendly relations, We were convinced that it was proper – in accordance with the practice of the most civilized governments in the case of their coronations – to invite to Our coronation the countries which had set up legations and consulates in Ithiopia. But as it would require a long time to dispatch the letters of invitation and to await the arrival of the delegates, as well as to make all the necessary preparations for the coronation, We arranged for the ceremony to be postponed for seven months.”

“My Life and Ethiopia’s Progress, Autobiography of Haile Selassie I ” – Page 171-3

The ceremony also broke with tradition in that the Empress was crowned on the same day as the Emperor and not three days later.

ABA SHANTI-I…

… Sound system operator Aba Shanti – I is a yearly highlight of London’s Notting Hill Carnival, where he’s held court since the 1970s with one of the most powerful rigs around. To his many followers, Aba is a heritage selector, synonymous with his legendary dub-plate collection, running his tracks like “Jah Lord” and “Jah Lightning And Thunder” on speakers so bass-heavy they can dislodge kidney stones. Aba was also one of the first touring sounds to acknowledge diversity in his audience, and always emphasises messages of unity and integration whilst toasting on the mic.

IRATION STEPPAS…

… Iration Steppas was originally set up by Mark Iration as a sound system in Leeds, where he played the latest sounds at blues dances, clubs and parties. With a posse of like-minded individuals Iration toured the country absorbing various sounds. With Papa Sam, the sound initially performed under the name Ital Rockers Hi Fi. Notable influences were Jah Shaka and Jah Tubby. Iration acknowledged that he was amazed by Jah Tubby’s collection of original dub plates when he secured his first acetates. A sound system clash in Leeds against Jah Shaka resulted in praise from the legendary soundman, encouraging Iration to continue in the business. In 1993, Iration linked up with Dennis Rootical (under the guise of Kitachi), performing the leftfield dope beat sound. Live appearances by the duo were greeted with enthusiasm, playing festivals and clubs around the UK. They are also acknowledged as being the first to utilize DAT recordings of their own tunes at the High Rise studio in Leeds and to mix them live. With Jack Rouble joining the group, their reputation grew and Iration Steppas released the classic “Scud Missile” in 1993. The single was met with enthusiasm and demand led to the discomix being re-pressed three times before eventually being deleted. The initial hit was followed by the equally popular 12-inch discomix, “Mystical Warrior”. Acclaimed by the media as Jah Shaka’s “enlightened offspring”, they followed the hit with two 10-inch releases, “Reminiscence Dub” and “Killimanjaro” both of which were featured on their debut album. As Kitachi they released three dope beat singles, “Spirit”, “Scratch Remix” and “Heavyweight”. The new wave of dub followers can also discover many specials recorded for a variety of 90s-style dub compilations, including Macro Dub Infection, Dubhead Volumes One and Two, Club Meets Dub and Dope On Plastic.

MAASAI WARIOR SOUND…

Maasai Warrior are a Sound System based In Bristol.
Their first debut was in 2010 at St Pauls Carnival (Bristol) on Argyle Rd. Shortly after playing regular sessions at the Black Swan with promotions such as Bristol Dub Club and Stepping Promotion. Up until July 2012 they started to play sessions outside of Bristol, the first city being Walsall, then in other cities after such as London, Birmingham, Leicester, etc. In December they first played outside England with a session in Grenoble, France.
As the sound progresses they started to play at more sessions around UK and In Europe with sounds such as Jah Lokko, King Alpha, O.B.F, Word Sound & Power, Young Warrior, Freedom Masses, Jah Youth, Roots Collective, Lion Youth, Equal Brothers, Roots Injection, Emperorfari and many more, as well as DJ sets with / on Instrument Of Jah, Roots Meditation, Mo Kalamity, Dubkasm, Aba Shanti-i, Kanka etc.
