Cultural Warriors & Krs One – “Green Related”

Cultural Warriors & Krs One – “Green Related”

I think there is no need of a wide presentation of those artists – Cultural Warriors are Swiss who destroyed many dance floors all over the Europe with their remixes and dubplates, Krs One is a living hip-hop legend. It’s not often for the soundsystem environment to cooperate and produce with the hip-hop one, but when it comes to it, it must be a banger. The single “Green Related” contains 5 tunes: two hip-hop versions, two stepper ones and one reggae-hip-hop. On the vocal versions we can hear Krs One rhyming about militant Swiss from Geneva, in the dub version Lion Paw (one of the producers from Cultural Warriors) confirms that he is talented by amazingly connecting steppers with a heavy beat, reverbs and a rumbling bass. I hope that Cultural Warriors will release more things like that – with a conscious message and highest musical level.

Welders Hi-Fi

Welders Hi-Fi

indeksFrance attacks again and surprises again, however it’s not a novelty for French dub fans. This time the ones that deign us with heavy steppers are Welders Hi-Fi. They work under the banner of Welders Sound System since 2008. Alba (selecta), Jo (operator and dubmaker) and Sama Renuka (vocal) – promote heavy, dub music and lead a label, which released 7” Ras Mykha in 2013. The new album contains 12 powerful productions, what is reaffirmed by “Dub Conqueror” or “Dub Warning” with beautiful voice of Dab Makouredjah (be sure to check http://dubmassive.org/en/7884/dakan-riddim-feat-daba-makourejah-bloffou-manjul-russ-disciples-12). The next strong track is “Freedom Fighters” with Joe Piligrim, who lately embellishes the best French dub productions with his voice. “Battlefield” and “Lost inna jungle” with beautiful melodica especially desires attention. The last one has also a mighty bass that pierces the whole body, just like “Lion Walking North” which also has a fabulous winds section – one of my favourites from the album.

Recently I got the feeling that everything coming from France is worth hearing. Welders Hi Fi album confirms that every dub fan should keep track of the French scene.

Jah Free – “The war drags on” (12”)

Jah Free – “The war drags on” (12”)

a side the war drags on label 2I’ve been very happy to hear that Jah Free is going to publish a new 12”. Since I remember, that artist connects music with a strong message, bringing up political or religious issues. It’s not different this time – the new release is a protest against the war. Eponymous tune ‘War drags on” performed by Jah Free is an original Donovan’s lyric from 1965, about the Vietnam war. Unfortunately, life shows that it’s still up-to-date in 2014. I-Mitri fitted the whole concept and set out a strong protest song named “No more war”. The third amazing vocalist is Mat-I – an Italian, who leads label Tamarat (http://dubmassive.org/8260/bass-culture-players-live-in-harmony-12), and Jah Free shows up as a very good chatter on the riddim; in the background we can also hear vocals by Jah Free and Simiah. On the B side of that amazing 12” we have 3 dub versions, first one with melodica, the second one is a deep heavyweight dub version and the third one Jah Free dedicates to all of the MCs to protest against the war.

Roots Ista Posse – “Dub The Iron / Bull Horn” (10”)

Roots Ista Posse – “Dub The Iron / Bull Horn” (10”)

R!P-1005-PROMOHalf a year after their last release Roots Ista Posse again make fans happy by releasing fresh 10”. A side contains undoubtedly heavyweight dub “Dub The Iron part I & II” – energetic, with tuff bassline and fast tempo. B side carries “Bull Horn part I & II”, slower tune but with devastating bass, which wonderfully gives a hard workout to speakers.

With this new 10” Roots Ista Posse confirm only my opinion, that their productions can be bought blindly! The vinyl is released by well known dub activists from Control Tower, you can grab it in their shop.

Bass Culture Players – “Live in harmony” (12”)

Bass Culture Players – “Live in harmony” (12”)

Na2676417311_10ew 12” released by Italian label Tamrat Records is a nice steppers style roller with soft sound, played by Bass Culture Players from Madrid. The tune is voiced by Ras Mat-I, who already has several tunes on the market, (his 12” with Jah Free will be available soon). “Live in harmony” contains 3 versions – in addition to vocal one we have instrumental with saxophone (played by Indi) and pure dub.

I-Skankers Records: Charlie P – “Ina The Ghetto” (12”)

I-Skankers Records: Charlie P – “Ina The Ghetto” (12”)

ISR12002_Flyer_I-SkankersGood news from France thanks to International Skankers Sound System, the crew from Rennes, which – besides spreading sound system vibes – runs also I-Skankers label. On their recent, second release we have UK talent Charlie P, who sounds great on tuff, steppers riddim singing touching lyrics. Similar like on the first release the music is made by French producer Dub Foundry, supported by RDH. On the flip side we got 2 dubs called “Dub is harder” and “Dub is raw” – these titles tells everything…

Mungos Hi Fi – “Serious time” (LP)

Mungos Hi Fi – “Serious time” (LP)

SCOBLP004_Front_500The Scotch aren’t slowing down. Their collaborations with Major Lazer and Prince Fatty are still fresh and yet we get a double LP on which we can hear meeting of modern sounds with classic ones straight from Studio One. It’s also a meeting of vocal legends and high-flyers of sound system scene – on the one hand Peter Metro, Cornel Campbell and on the other Charlie P or Pupajim, the leading young vocalists of the last years. Although I don’t listen to sounds presented by Mungos Hi Fi in high doses, I approach every their release with a big curiosity and, what’s best, I’m hardly ever disappointed. I found them masters of connecting the old productions with the modernity and their own, original style.

On the beginning of “Serious time” we get a huge shell from YT himself, then also on a classic Studio One rhythm appears Warrior Queen, one of the best female chatters, just like Soom T, who’s in her element on Mungos’ rhythms. We slowly approach half of the album with Pupajim, who chats about loveliness of driving a bike (my favorite tune from this album), although the next one also causes you smile and blush. All of that because of the initial theme from 80’s hit song “Axel F” by Nil Rodgers, which has also been used in “Beverly Hills Cop” movie, in Mungos’ version vocally enchanted by Mr. Williamz. After a hit like that we stay in dancehall-ish climate with Speng Bond and then Soom T flows on a dubstep rhythm, just like Marina P, who sings about nowadays slavery. Solo Banton also presents us a beautiful story in ”Dancehall school” on a classical, but spiced up with a modern sauce Sleng Teng, then Charlie P takes the reins and chats about “green tea”. The next track is a bow to 80s UK sound systems by a veteran Peter Metro. Blackout JA perfectly flows on a dancehall riddim and then you can listen to Charlie P for the second time, here he tells us story of his attraction to sound system scene. Second to last is a fat tune with Parly B, but it surely does not eclipse the last one – Cornel’s “Jah say Love” – amazing rhythm and the best, harmonical voice of a legend (that tune is another pearl from the album). If you love strong bass rhythms, you can’t pass this album by, and if you still aren’t convinced, maybe the guest list will tip the balance.
