The Dubateers – Dubplate Collection vol.4

The Dubateers – Dubplate Collection vol.4

10610619_801224643234253_5535532503384018499_nNick Dubateers is a person who always makes me excited about his productions and when something is released under his name it’s a sure killer. Known collaborations with Charlie P, Kenny Knots, Singer Blue, Tenna Star, Ras Negus are one of a kind – strongly digital with heavy bass line. However, Dubateers on this album presents a collection of dubplates, which are tunes in a very heavy dub style. It’s fourth part of soundsystem ‘heavyweight style’ tunes and besides King Earthquake’s albums it’s undoubtedly unique.

Dubplate Collection Vol.4 consists of 11 tracks and the same number of dub versions. Every of them has amazing, piercing bass and a trance mood – listen to ‘Africa Dub’, ‘Loaded Dub’ or the heaviest gauge ‘Cutting Dub mix 3’, ‘Field Marshall Dub mix 2’ and dark ‘Predator Dub mix 2’. There are no doubts that heavy dub lovers will like that album.

Legendary musicians on 7” – “All rudies in jail” – Jamaican All Stars / Cubiculo Records

Legendary musicians on 7” – “All rudies in jail” – Jamaican All Stars / Cubiculo Records

CR7003_FB_COVERCubiculo Records is a label that surprises me every release (for example here http://dubmassive.org/8178/cubiculo-records-crucial-stepper-ep) and it’s the same this time. On their last production they showed that they are not going to focus only on digital style and the newest 7″ is a mixture of roots, rocksteady, amazing vocals and toasting. Everything in favour of super crew Jamaican All Stars, which consists of Skuly Simms, Vin Gordon, Laraque, Bunny Robinson, BB. Bassy, Junior Wilson, Trevor Thomson, Ken G – a pleiad of living reggae legends. Those musicians played i.a. for The Upsetters, The Heptones, The Aggrovators or Roots Radics and hey set the band after the premiere of “Portraits Of Jamaican Music” film thanks to Winward Records.

Nucleus Roots – “Hail Up The Sound Man” – Ria/Trevor Roots (7”)

Nucleus Roots – “Hail Up The Sound Man” – Ria/Trevor Roots (7”)

a0975984946_10Nucleus Roots is a remarkable crew for me – thanks to their concert on Winter Reggae festival in 2004 I felt in love with dub music. Later on I rarely ran across their productions, the last album was released in 2008 (http://dubmassive.org/142/nucleus-roots-%E2%80%9Cheart-of-the-matter%E2%80%9D/). In 2013 there were some tough productions signed by Nucleus Roots Records with Trevor Roots, Ossie Gad or Stikki Tantafari, however I hit only on  this year’s release with Ria and Trevor Roots. The new 7″ is a tribute to all of the women and men who find sound systems a big part of their lives. Ria with beautiful vocals is being completed by amazing Trevor’s chat and all of that on a heavy dub rhythm with hypnotic keys sounds. The bass is leading in the dub version, there also are a lot of reverbs and echoes. Nucleus Roots comes back in an incredible style with a tune that will conquer quite a few sessions!

Inspirational Sound & Stephanie & Dan Man

Inspirational Sound & Stephanie & Dan Man

1901200_742088605849578_7131877504943886940_nHalf a year after the last release by Inspirational Sound they deign us with four new, heavy tracks. The A side is ruled by Stephanie already known from Dub Lab studio productions, who sings about love to The Almighty One, and the dub version deepens the meditative state. The second side belongs to an amazing warrior already known to the dub audience – Dan Man, who perfectly fits Stephanie’s vocals and made it a dj version. Dub of that tune puts emphasis on mystical drums rhythm by Bunnington Judah. To sum up – Inspirational Sound give us a steppers with tough bass, which will stay in your head for a long time and brings in a meditative trance (especially in “Walk with dub”).

Gentleman’s Dub Club – Fourty Four: The Remixes

Gentleman’s Dub Club – Fourty Four: The Remixes

REMIX_EP_RGB_V4A year after Gentleman’s Dub Club album „Fourty Four” we get EP with 5 remixes produced by the best dubheads. Those are amazing tunes, for a long time I didn’t have the feeling that the remix is better than the original. Any doubts could be resolved by “Forward” version made by Dubkasm, where DJ Stryda and Digistep used the heavy, dubstepi-like rhythm adding their own, unique steppers style. I’ve been very surprised by Dubmatix, his productions charmed me lately and here he also shows his best – he exposed the bass line in “Play this” and did it gorgeously, just like I’ve been listening to King Tubby. There also is our own Radikal Guru, who made “Riot” a heavyweight tune in Iration Steppas style. The next tune is a remix from DJ Madd, who smashes the dance floors with his dubstep versions and it’s the same this time. The last tune “Give it away” by Planas leaves us in the trance state. Very successful release!

Frenchtown Hi Fi Vol 1

Frenchtown Hi Fi Vol 1

BandeauFrenchTownlogonewFor the first time on two CDs we get amazing, insightful producers and vocalists in 35 tunes, which present the sound system scene condition in France – this is how the massive medley Frenchtown Hi Fi vol 1 is advertised. It’s been a long time since a release such like that, a few years ago there were netlabel albums Italian Dub Community or even our Dub out of Poland, but we have not seen something like that from France or UK recently.

The playlist itself made me realize that it’s mandatory release. I remember a lot of similar albums, which disappointed me, but this time it’s different… it’s just a firecracker! The division, which I noticed (but maybe it’s just my taste and loose interpretation) is interesting too: on the first CD i see heavyweight steppers tunes, and the second seems to contain more UK roots/steppers tracks in Twinkle Brothers or Aswad style at their best – so beloved by Jah Shaka.

tracklisting Frenchtown HiFi vol.1CD 1 is K-Sann, who recently released a heavy album on ODG netlabel, here supported by beautiful voice of Sista Irecla. There are my favorites Roots Ista Posse with Ras Mykha and a killer “Tell Dem Again”, then Daba Makourejah from Rootical 45 calms us down a bit. There is also Barbes D with amazing vocalist Ras Hassen Ti, Jacin with strong tune “Conscious Education”, we also get beautiful horns, melodica and vocal of Sista Auda, Far East and Iny Boca. Val Dawa hits us with a heavy tune and Humble Youth deigns us with beautiful harmony. At the end of the first CD there is Ackboo with great energy, which encourage us to listen to the second part. Here, on the beginning, there is beautiful tune “Change” by Jazzy Lei – you just want to sing Love is Harmony with her. Then you dive into wonderful mood of Mo Kalamity and The Wizards with lovely violin in the background. Jacko and Simon Nyabin confuse me because I thought that it’s Twinke Brothers at their best shape! The next tunes are solid productions with upscale vocalists – Marina P doesn’t need to be introduced, Yehoud I is a revelation of the last year, especially on “Likkle zion” and Joe Pilgrim proves his unusual talent. We have to add few more to the bunch: Sista Bethsabee with Creation Culture stepped into digital reggae climate and Sista Charlote with ITP Music present us best UK dub style. On the end there is Fu – Steps known from ODG netlabel releases.

To sum up, it’s a great medley which can be listened without end. Most of the tunes got their dub versions on the highest level, which made this album complete. Listen to the French dub, it’s really worth!

Jah Mirikle / Rebelsteppa – “Spiritual Heights”

Jah Mirikle / Rebelsteppa – “Spiritual Heights”

STD027Rebelsteppa – a Moscow-based musician and producer – together with Estonian label Strictly Dub Records and a UK poet-vocalist Jah Mirikle released a single “Spiritual Heights” recently. Musically it is a melodic, deep riddim with lyrics about spiritual nature of human being. For dessert we got two Rebelsteppa’s dub versions – “Dub Heights” contains a lot of echoes, reverbs and vocal snippets. “Spiritual Dub” exposes resonating bassline.

This release is available only as a digital download.

Zion Train – “Money” EP

Zion Train – “Money” EP

1000x450The dub veterans don’t slow down – they are going to release a new EP “Money” that announces the new album named “Land of the blind”, which is coming out at the end of the year. The release is opened by Jamaican bobo dread Fitta Warri, who again performs with whole Zion Train crew and shows his bests style in “Permanent Pressure”. Part-time Zion Train chatter Dubdadda in “Roots Man Play” shows his remarkable skill as a singer. Daman, who lately recorded a genius netlabel release with K-Sann (http://odgprod.com/2014/05/k-sann-ft-daman-monopolize-ep/), is responsible for the last vocal version. On the rhythm made by Zion Train his voice sounds brilliant and the lyrics about money will reach everyone.

The Zion Train rhythm “Money” deserves few words as well – the version for vocalists is a classic production in the Neils Perch style, winds section is an important element here. I’ve been surprised while listening to “Money Dub”. The rhythm seemingly doesn’t change compared with the one with vocals (of course there were reverbs, echoes, sirens etc.) and in the middle of the track something happens – the bass turns into one known better from dubstep productions for such a short time that it amazingly spices up the whole tune. I admire Perch for that he is able to use various elements and still doesn’t follow the new trends and stays on the roots path set out long before. There is nothing else left than repeat the invitation to Zion Train concert in Ostróda and unfortunately wait for some records and comments from it, eventually it’s 25 years of joy of their music!
