Archetype Records presents Violinbwoy – “Shiver Shashamane”

Archetype Records presents Violinbwoy – “Shiver Shashamane”

10464228_320296294800729_224578576440448909_nArchetype Records from France is another relatively new label in a dub world and they has released 7” with our countryman Violinbowy, containing heavyweight dubwise at its best. The A side with “Shiver Shashamane” is a original riddim with resonating bass, accompanied by violin melody. The track is 4 minutes long with a lot of tasteful themes. The B side is a dub version, where violin is on the background but when it comes, goose bumps appears on the whole body. The attention is also attracted by the cover and clip – animation created strictly for this tune, perfectly matched with music. “Must have” release for all maniacs of heavyweight dub!

Ps. Also check out the first release from Archetype – “Nemesis” by Haspra, also heavy tune which breaks Babylon walls!

Kalina in Dub – “Second hand”

Kalina in Dub – “Second hand”

kalinaIn Poland there is not too much dub live acts so I wonder why – when such project appears – it’s not mentioned almost anywhere. So I want to break the silence today introducing a project by Kalina – a man, who played in a reggae band Arkapark, a jungle Hajer Boss and a punk Hercklekot. He describes himself as a producer, author, lyricist and vocalist. Kalina in Dub is his first solo project. On our scene there are a very few people like him – “one man army” living with music. He loves dub so much that he decided to finalise the project no matter what.

Album “Second hand” contains 14 tunes (remixes to be more precise), where the common denominator is dub in its wide meaning. The album is opened by “Ktoś czeka”, where Kalina serves us Asian-inspired melodies introducing to a meditative state, just like in “Dub” – that tune by Jamal gains power in the Kalina’s remix with his beautiful melodica. The next track is remix of Dub Syndicate “Fire Burning” with a lot of echoes and effects – honey for the ears. There is a surprise – a guest appears on the album and it’s Bajka from Fire In The Hole in the tune originally recorded for Hajer Boss but on a dub rhythm, what makes me wonder why she doesn’t appear on dub productions too often. This tune also has a beautiful saxophone part recorded by Janusz Makowski. In the 5th track Kalina faced a Polish reggae legend: Izrael – “See I&I” is a very good version stepping into dubstep climate, with a charming melodica. In the next remix he meets another legend, this time an UK dub one – Alpha&Omega and “Meditation Rock” is one of my favourites from the album, you have to check out how he spiced up that seemingly calm tune. When we approach the half of the album dubstep climate begins to rule, a good examples are “W Korbielowie” and a classic by Bob Marley “Mr Brown”, reminding me of Radikal Guru’s productions – a real soundsystem killer. The next tune is “Nie ma nic” – a remix of Hecklekot, a punk band where he was the vocalist. Here we get a solid dub with a tough bass line, spacial effects and strong lyrics, just like in “Na szczycie” by Grubson. Next we head to “Święty szczyt” (The Holy Summit), a classic track by Kryzys, where Kalina sings a very important for some people lyric that perfectly fits the music. We are getting closer to the end and we get another classic tune of a certain generation – “Centrala” by Brygada Kryzys (my next favourite). The vocals are great and the composition is so varied that after you hear it once you know you will come back to it a lot of times. The last track is “Słoneczko” by Konopians – I really like the original version but I miss something here – maybe too few vocals.

To sum up – if you haven’t heard of Kalina you need to catch up and – if possible – see him live, as it’s best to listen to music like that live, when the artist can afford much more. If you like a lot of bass, full range of effects and echoes then you have to check this album!

Rootikal Dub Foundation feat. MrDill Lion Warriah/El Nadie (4 Weed Records)

4WDV001 Artwork4weed is a Italian label/netlabel, which has appeared on our site several times. This time they have released 12” loaded with a seriously heavyweight dub. All of this due to Rootikal Dub Foundation, who serve us amazing steppers “It’s time to change” with beautiful saxophone’s part, additionally MrDill Lion Warriah appears on the vocal, ideally fitting into the track with great lyrics. Also we get a dub version by 4weed All Stars, which gives us a lot of kickin’ bass and transports us to a soundsystem arena. The release is complemented by El Nadie from Turin, who created addictive melody and when the bass comes into the play we feel huge potential of this steppers. The dub version is a top-of-the-line mystique and heavyweight climate!

Zion Train – “Warrior Step” (Deep Root)

Zion Train – “Warrior Step” (Deep Root)

ROOT045-labelsThe next release from Zion Train, which announces their new album “Land of The Blind” (March 2015), is a 7” single “Warrior Step” and it seriously warming up emotions before the LP. The track – as title suggests – is a strong punch for dub warriors with irreplaceable horns, which as usual add amazing energy – it has been already tested on sound systems like Channel One or Jah Shaka. The dub version is a show of skills, which dubmaster DJ Perch has without a doubt – he plays with effects and bass in his own, unique style.

Jeph1 & I-Mitri – “Blaze ” (MindStep)

Jeph1 & I-Mitri – “Blaze ” (MindStep)

MSS004---Blaze---[artwork]MindStep label is known from electronic, dubstep and drum’n’bass productions – generally speaking, they promote bass music producers. They have released artworks by i.a. Adam Prescott, who I think is widely known by us, dubheads, or Perverse – who recently has recorded for New Moon.

Getting straight to the point – I am glad to present you a single by Jeph1, a heavyweight producer from Athens, who creates a heavily dark music in relation to the sunny land he comes from. “Blaze” is a dose of good electronics and juicy bass, conjoined with I-Mitri’s vocals. Additionally, there are 3 remixes. The first (and my favourite) one is made by Dubkasm – Dj Stryda and Digistep have turned that tune into a steppers in their own, unique style – any fan of their productions will know that bass. This remix delights me even more due to the fact that music from Dubkasm soothes my soul, even if the weight often doesn’t reflect it. Remix by Trashbat has also worked that way – such a soft, chill-out mood. On the end there are dubstep warriors from The Iluminated, who record i.a. for New Moon and know well what is dubstep without sick drillers and full of heavy bass and space.

B-No ft. Trevor Junior – “People Are Changing” (Cubiculo Records)

B-No ft. Trevor Junior – “People Are Changing” (Cubiculo Records)

FB_Label7_CR_1Cubiculo Records label surprises me with each, new release. After their last trip to rocksteady area now they return to their favourite rub a dub style – but in a classic way, in contrast to the previous more digital release. The classics we mainly owe to Trevor Junior, a reggae legend from 80., who, on the riddim by French producer’s B-no from Upfull Posse Crew, proves that rub a dub is still very well even in the times, when this genre is not so popular as back in the days. Trevor signs, that “people are changing” in these hard times and everyone has some problems. A big plus for Trevor and B-no for such uplifting riddim and words!

O.B.F – “Wild”

O.B.F – “Wild”

Cover _ OBF _ WILDWhen in the summer I heard that OBF is going to release a long play, my pressure automatically rose and till the premiere I was tremendously excited. I admire them for both their productions and live gigs.

The album named “Wild” is not OBF’s debut – they have released their productions in Dubquake Records and in their own label. Several very nice remixes have been also published (High Tone, Chinese Man). But this LP is a summary of their 15 years of sound system activity.

“Wild” contains 12 energetic tunes and anybody can find something catchy here. On the very beginning we get a tough kick in the “Dub Controller”, where the bass pierces your whole body. Charlie P is on the vocal – he feels very well on such riddims. Next we get a mighty tune “Goin In”, where YT again proves he is one of the top soundsystem scene MCs. The third tune is a big surprise by Sis I-Leen, who has already appeared on OBF productions and here, in the “Ladies Anthem”, she shows that women can manage heavyweight dubs very well. With next tune with Lone Ranger, a legendary DJ from Studio One, OBF give a tribute to digital reggae and show that they don’t close themselves in only one style. The best proof for that is crazy “Who’s Bad”, that reminds me productions from Stand High Patrol, which also surprise with their unpredictability. Troy Barkley, who usually cooperates with Fogata Sounds, has got a pretty heavy rhythm, but handles it well, with a strong lyrics about Babylon. Mr. Williamz gives a good presentation of what rub a dub is in a tune named “Poorman”. With the title “Wild” we can take a breath, feeling a hard bassline and meditative melody. It’s a good thing, because “Get High” with Shanti D is a real boom shot. Soft Shanti’s voice on a very heavy rhythm immediately takes us to a soundsystem session and we hear how the stacks barely handle the low frequencies! Next, thanks to Danman, we stay in the subject of the “green herb” and hover 30cm over the dance floor. After we get grounded by dirty voice of Burro Banton (which I love) – on Rico’s steppers it sounds even more harsh and tough. At the end we get a calm tune with Mikey General.

This album fully represents what OBF shows in their sets – an amazing rub-a-dub with digital energy and heavy, strong steppers. Of course, one could say that there are too few heavy productions and too much digital versions, but I think that O.B.F  will keep surprising us. I encourage everyone to listen to this great, energetic album!
