I-Skankers Records: Charlie P – “Ina The Ghetto” (12”)

I-Skankers Records: Charlie P – “Ina The Ghetto” (12”)

ISR12002_Flyer_I-SkankersGood news from France thanks to International Skankers Sound System, the crew from Rennes, which – besides spreading sound system vibes – runs also I-Skankers label. On their recent, second release we have UK talent Charlie P, who sounds great on tuff, steppers riddim singing touching lyrics. Similar like on the first release the music is made by French producer Dub Foundry, supported by RDH. On the flip side we got 2 dubs called “Dub is harder” and “Dub is raw” – these titles tells everything…

New Dubkasm EP – “Untold Stories” (2×12”)

New Dubkasm EP – “Untold Stories” (2×12”)

dubkasmNew EP by Dubkasm, released by Peng Sound, will be available this Monday. It is a very special release, because it contains vocals of Lidj Xylon, who has now sadly passed away. Vocal tracks recorded years ago, now has been restored and decorated with Dubkasm music. My special attention has been attracted by “Heartical Stories”, rich instrumental riddim with beautiful horns – it can be otherwise, when Digistep is assisted by Galgo, responsible for the hornsline on Victory; classic, rootical Dubkasm style. “Zulu” instead will be loved by fans of heavier dub vibration. Additionally this double release features also Dub Judah, Ras B and Tes Fa Syon.

Mandatory item.

Duke Production presents – The Giants “Adapted Chapter” (free download)

Duke Production presents – The Giants “Adapted Chapter” (free download)

the giantsDuke Production is Switzerland-based reggae and dub label, which has several releases out on the street as 7” or digital downloads with riddims provided by The Giants – solid roots vibes with a little, modern flavour.

Little more about this band – The Giants is a trio – drum, bass and guitar, but they record far more stuff like horns and percussions. Recently they prepared 18 tracks full album, recorded during live studio sessions entirely on a 8-tracks tape recorder from the late 80s. Compositions also are in old-school style, so all together sounds awesome, like classic dubs with tape echoes, soft drums and strictly dubwise taste.

The release is available free, in several places over the Internet, so catch it where you prefer.

Mungos Hi Fi – “Serious time” (LP)

Mungos Hi Fi – “Serious time” (LP)

SCOBLP004_Front_500The Scotch aren’t slowing down. Their collaborations with Major Lazer and Prince Fatty are still fresh and yet we get a double LP on which we can hear meeting of modern sounds with classic ones straight from Studio One. It’s also a meeting of vocal legends and high-flyers of sound system scene – on the one hand Peter Metro, Cornel Campbell and on the other Charlie P or Pupajim, the leading young vocalists of the last years. Although I don’t listen to sounds presented by Mungos Hi Fi in high doses, I approach every their release with a big curiosity and, what’s best, I’m hardly ever disappointed. I found them masters of connecting the old productions with the modernity and their own, original style.

On the beginning of “Serious time” we get a huge shell from YT himself, then also on a classic Studio One rhythm appears Warrior Queen, one of the best female chatters, just like Soom T, who’s in her element on Mungos’ rhythms. We slowly approach half of the album with Pupajim, who chats about loveliness of driving a bike (my favorite tune from this album), although the next one also causes you smile and blush. All of that because of the initial theme from 80’s hit song “Axel F” by Nil Rodgers, which has also been used in “Beverly Hills Cop” movie, in Mungos’ version vocally enchanted by Mr. Williamz. After a hit like that we stay in dancehall-ish climate with Speng Bond and then Soom T flows on a dubstep rhythm, just like Marina P, who sings about nowadays slavery. Solo Banton also presents us a beautiful story in ”Dancehall school” on a classical, but spiced up with a modern sauce Sleng Teng, then Charlie P takes the reins and chats about “green tea”. The next track is a bow to 80s UK sound systems by a veteran Peter Metro. Blackout JA perfectly flows on a dancehall riddim and then you can listen to Charlie P for the second time, here he tells us story of his attraction to sound system scene. Second to last is a fat tune with Parly B, but it surely does not eclipse the last one – Cornel’s “Jah say Love” – amazing rhythm and the best, harmonical voice of a legend (that tune is another pearl from the album). If you love strong bass rhythms, you can’t pass this album by, and if you still aren’t convinced, maybe the guest list will tip the balance.

High Tone – “Ekphrön” (CD)

High Tone – “Ekphrön” (CD)

Ekphron-2014High Tone has made a remarkable position on dub scene through the years of their playing and cooperating with other dub artists. This band is a solid brand of French dub and great example of musical creativity, vision and exploration of various musical ideas.

Latest album – “Ekphrön” – makes up a great proof of above statement. This time the musicians takes us to a psychedelic trip and this trip won’t give you easy answers. Be ready for synth sounds drilling your mind. Be ready for harmonies followed by wild wobbles. Large pads and instruments chords, all of this exchanging like in kaleidoscope. Expect the unexpected. Here dub is one element of a puzzle. A puzzle which is hard to solve but it is OK – each element can be the most important, not the whole picture.

If you like dub in a classic, more “regular form” then I don’t know if this album is for you. But if you, like me, love to introduce some chaos to your mind, then don’t waste time and go for it. And make very loud when you will come to the centre of this release – “Raag step” – insane…

Dark dub from ZamZam Sounds – Dub War & Infra (7”)

zamzam20_DUBWAR&INFRA_jacket_label copyLatest release from ZamZam Sounds is now available in stores. This label accustomed us to highly sophisticated music with various flavors of dub and urban sounds. This time we got 7” with dark, heavy and restless dubwise made by Berlin based dou of Dub War and Infra. “If it’s not the police” takes us through a path demarcated by deep bass surrounded by spatial dub aesthetics, escalated in dub version with flying sounds of congas and percussion.

Turn off the light, turn up the volume.

Two great reissues of dub vibes from 90s – Disicples and Aba Shanti-I.

Two great reissues of dub vibes from 90s – Disicples and Aba Shanti-I.

Two great reissues have been released recently, both of them are from my favorite period in dub music – 90s. First 12” was prepared by Jah Roots Hi Fi and they picked Disciples classics – “Positive vibration” and “Humble Lion” with Mark Iration. What to say, serious dub vibes with dense and heavy atmosphere.

Second one is one of the first Aba Shanti-I releases – “Positive vibration” representing very characteristic roots style of Earth Rocker, sound of Jah lighting and thunder, literally!

Don’t miss these two!

The Grinders – “Under Arrest”

The Grinders – “Under Arrest”

the grinders_album03.inddProbably not many knows The Grinders, I’m not suprised to be honest – I have discovered them recently and with great joy I report to you about new release of this duo, which makes music in rub-a-dub fashion. It is also another crew, which try to join modern vibes with classics and top vocals help them – undisputed master Ranking Joe on strong hip-hop riddim, the first lady of classic dancehall Lady Ann at her best and Tippa Irie, who has been a little bit unseen lately. We have amazing version Sizzla’s tune with Squdily Cole on this album – definitely for bass lovers, but having a little in common with dub. For fans of classics we got excellent “Living in the jungle” Squildy Cole & Tabby Diamond from Mighty Diamonds. At the end we have several dub versions, two of which deserves attention – “Trample Down Babylon” and “Let Me Rock you” with U-Brown vocal parts (who a year earlier recorded his full album with The Grinders).
