[Review] Mungo’s Hi Fi feat. YT – “No Wata Down Ting”

[Review] Mungo’s Hi Fi feat. YT – “No Wata Down Ting”

SCOBLP006_cover_1500This is it! After so many great collaborations, YT and Mungo’s Hi-Fi released a LP. Ten tracks full of rub-a-dub and reggae vibe sound just excellent. It can’t be otherwise when Prince Fatty is invited to cooperation – warm but powerful basslines (“Raggamuffin girl”!) and an analogue flavour are guaranteed. Besides YT we hear also two legends – Johnny Osbourne and Little John – and the tracks with these two are my favourites. Especially “No Wata Down Ting” sounds great, combining an old-school style with a modern beat. Back to YT – he proves with this LP, that he is a complete artist. Vocally he is moving smoothly between fast chatting and singing, also lyrically he is not afraid to touch many topics. Musically he fits in with reggae vibe (brilliant “Work to do”), not to mention rub-a-dub/dancehall and even jazz-like ska (“Bumpercart”). An excellent album for pleasurable listening.

From roots to digital bass vibes – Mungo’s Hi-Fi

From roots to digital bass vibes – Mungo’s Hi-Fi

These 4 records, released at the end of 2015, come in a different flavour. Two of them came out in Scotch Bonnet label and they proof Mungo’s love to classic rub-a-dub. They recorded Johnny’s Osbourne hit “Ice Cream Love” with Johnny himself but also with Prince Fatty’s live band. This name is for me synonymous with beautiful sound and so it is with this one – the riddim sounds warm and rootical with a little bit of modern flavour. On the second version Johnny’s voice is paired with excellent vocal of YT.

Two next 12” releases came out in Scrub A Dub label and brings digital deep vibes.  Here Mungo’s invited dubstep master from Croatia – Egoless and Vital Techniques & Mickey B, who remixed Squarewave’s “Police officer” and Mungo’s Hi-Fi and YT – “Boomsound”. These killer bangers will satisfy all lovers of modern bass music!

MUNGO’S HI FI (Glasgow, UK)

Mungo’s Hi Fi first set sail at the turn of the millennium – a time when soundsystem culture was at low tide in the Clyde estuary. They had to dig deep into reggae dancehall heritage to distill its essence, avoiding mimicry like the plague and always keeping it real. The example of soundsystem pioneers showed the way – using the latest technology to build on the past, conscious of the current climate.

The digital age has brought on a storm of musical offerings making it hard for music lovers to navigate a safe course. Mungo’s Hi Fi shine a light in the darkness.

As the good ship Mungo grew, so did the crew. Seven now make up the permanent company, each with their own responsibilities for producing and releasing the music, running the label, shop, playing live shows and putting on promotions. Together with a hard working crew of MCs, box lifters and visual artists they work as a team, relying on all their strengths and not just strong personalities that can cause a sound to run aground. They have been on adventures all over the globe, sometimes travelling alone, sometimes with the whole crew.

At sea you learn self reliance, how to keep a positive attitude and how to have fun. They maintain a suspicion of cultural pirates and their abuse of power, which is why they choose to retain control over how they make and present their music, favouring passion over presentation.

When counter currents start to challenge the mainstream they will always meet opposition. As the tide begins to swell they are ready to batten down the hatches and provide a beating heart for those who battle injustice with the power of love and the human spirit. In order to stop complaining and start competing they have had to face their own fears and private opposition, get organised and fight back. In this serious time war is not the answer as only love can conquer.

ROOTS MELODY ( Pabianice)

Kolektyw ten powstał w 2011 roku, w Pabianicach by szerzyć rootsową wibrację, której podstawą jest równość i brak jakichkolwiek uprzedzeń. W rok później, bo 2012 owocem ciężkiej pracy stanęła ścianka głośników. Roots Melody, to korzenna roots reggae, dub, UK dub selekcja i forma grania zainspirowana soundsystemowymi mistrzami z Wielkiej Brytanii i Jamajki. Silne brzmienie basu i perkusji, to również wiadomość w rub-a-dubowym stylu na mikrofonie. A przede wszystkim, to ludzie którzy wspierają tę misję, poruszając swoimi ciałami w rytm muzyki.

Dubkasm feat. YT and Rudey Lee – “Higher Meds / Coming in Ruff”

Dubkasm feat. YT and Rudey Lee – “Higher Meds / Coming in Ruff”

DUBK025 LABEL CROP rezizedDj Stryda and Digistep put their attention to education in a roots&culture style, it is known for anyone, who has been at their show or listened to Stryda’s show. On their releases they also promote good, old and unforgettable tunes, often they also refresh them to teach younger generations about importance of roots. So it is with this 12”, where YT and Rudey Lee go wild vocally, musically Dubkasm has refreshed a classic from 90., which was voiced by – amongst others – Dennis Brown (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LQcMl1bLyo) or Shabba Ranks.

To sum up – this new 12” brings great energy and vocalists. The dub version as always has a powerful bass and vibe, which is associated to Dubkasm’s productions.

Radikal Guru – “Digitalizer Riddim” EP

Radikal Guru – “Digitalizer Riddim” EP

851x350_fbcover1

From 16th of February a new Radikal Guru’s EP -“Digitalizer Riddim” – will be available on the market. The main idea of this release is the riddim from “Stay Calm” track from previous album “Subconscious” with YT on the vocal – which is a powerful dub, with a resonating bass and characteristic horns. And now we get also dub version and great Cian Finn, who in “Sound System” describes feelings close to probably every fan of sound system sessions. Also, to my great joy, we have version with El Fata, who in “Get Up” with his melodic chat encourages us to move to the music. As a bonus track we have dub version with vocal snippets from all versions.

EP will be available as 12” and digital download.

Mungos Hi Fi – “Serious time” (LP)

Mungos Hi Fi – “Serious time” (LP)

SCOBLP004_Front_500The Scotch aren’t slowing down. Their collaborations with Major Lazer and Prince Fatty are still fresh and yet we get a double LP on which we can hear meeting of modern sounds with classic ones straight from Studio One. It’s also a meeting of vocal legends and high-flyers of sound system scene – on the one hand Peter Metro, Cornel Campbell and on the other Charlie P or Pupajim, the leading young vocalists of the last years. Although I don’t listen to sounds presented by Mungos Hi Fi in high doses, I approach every their release with a big curiosity and, what’s best, I’m hardly ever disappointed. I found them masters of connecting the old productions with the modernity and their own, original style.

On the beginning of “Serious time” we get a huge shell from YT himself, then also on a classic Studio One rhythm appears Warrior Queen, one of the best female chatters, just like Soom T, who’s in her element on Mungos’ rhythms. We slowly approach half of the album with Pupajim, who chats about loveliness of driving a bike (my favorite tune from this album), although the next one also causes you smile and blush. All of that because of the initial theme from 80’s hit song “Axel F” by Nil Rodgers, which has also been used in “Beverly Hills Cop” movie, in Mungos’ version vocally enchanted by Mr. Williamz. After a hit like that we stay in dancehall-ish climate with Speng Bond and then Soom T flows on a dubstep rhythm, just like Marina P, who sings about nowadays slavery. Solo Banton also presents us a beautiful story in ”Dancehall school” on a classical, but spiced up with a modern sauce Sleng Teng, then Charlie P takes the reins and chats about “green tea”. The next track is a bow to 80s UK sound systems by a veteran Peter Metro. Blackout JA perfectly flows on a dancehall riddim and then you can listen to Charlie P for the second time, here he tells us story of his attraction to sound system scene. Second to last is a fat tune with Parly B, but it surely does not eclipse the last one – Cornel’s “Jah say Love” – amazing rhythm and the best, harmonical voice of a legend (that tune is another pearl from the album). If you love strong bass rhythms, you can’t pass this album by, and if you still aren’t convinced, maybe the guest list will tip the balance.

Kanka – “Watch Your Step”

Kanka – “Watch Your Step”

Kanka-WatchYourStep-VisuelHDbA long awaited day by me has come – my speakers play the new Kanka album. Yes, it’s been almost 3 years Since the last release, so the appetite is huge. The artist serves us 12 heavy, consistent compositions with 3 amazing vocalists. The album is opened by „Venus Dub” – here I felt like I have actually had a journey to this planet, but we quickly get back to the earth thanks to Echo Ranks, who’s in very good shape. He sings about troubles and worries of each of us. That tune is from cycle „I have heard it before” In the lyric layer, but musically Kanka crushes me hard, especially with the bassline. The next tune doesn’t slow down – „Ghost Dub” reminded me of killer „Scratchy”, in „London” the winds nicely fit into the tough, dark dub close to the style of Iration Steppas. „Straight Dub” and „37” are steppers that make you skank hard. That’s how we get to the next track with El Fata as a guest. I have a fondness for him and his dub vocals, and his chat is just briliant. Thereafter „Rainbow Dub” and again heavenly winds which I love in reggae and dub – i deliquesce in such sounds to get strength and carry the burden of every-day reality. Additionaly, hearing crowning ideally integrated like Kanka did charges me fully. That album is merciless for the listener – in a good way of course – and it’s caused by the last two tunes: „Stepperstyle” again with Echo Ranks. It shows that the vocalists gets back to shape because (in my opinion) he lost it in few last tunes. Finally, we have „We love bass” – the title itself says a lot – Kanka loves bass and he knows how to use it well. It won’t be an overstatement if I say that it’s the best album of that French warrior!
