ASWAD

Aswad (“Black” in Arabic) are a long-lasting British reggae group, noted for adding strong R&B, soul, and soca influences to the reggae sound. They have been performing since the early 1970s, and have released a total of twenty-one albums.

As naturalised children of immigrants from the Caribbean, part of the aftermath of World War II, the children were moved to London. They attended a local high school near Ladbroke Grove, and various junior schools as Tan Tan children of immigrants from the Caribbean around West London in 1975. Vocalist Brinsley Forde had a brief career on television on the British children’s television series “Here Come the Double Deckers” in 1970-71.

The original members of Aswad were Brinsley Forde, George Oban, Drummie Zeb, and Donald Griffiths. Courtney Hemmings was a frequent contributor in the 1970s, including as part of the backing band on Burning Spear’s 1979 Live album, recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London.

They became one the U.K.’s top reggae bands with songs, typical of the time, about the oppression of black youth, such as “Three Babylon” and “It’s Not Our Wish”, and the powerful jazz-influenced instrumental “Warrior Charge”.

The band gained a wider audience with the New Chapter album (1981). “Fire”, the opening track gained wide recognition when it was used as the backing rhythm for Dennis Brown’s “Promised Land.”

Among Aswad’s catalogue of hits is “Don’t Turn Around”, a pop hit in 1988. This track was originally a B-side to Tina Turner’s hit “Typical Male”, which was later covered by Ace of Base; and a reggae flavoured rendition of “Best of My Love”, first popularised and written by The Eagles. Their next hit, Shine, was released in 1994. Another track was the upbeat 1998 remake of The Police’s “Invisible Sun”, performed with Sting.

The band also hold the distinction of having played with each one of the ex-Wailers.

DAWN PENN

Dawn Penn is one of the original queens of reggae music. A native of Kingston, Jamaica, she grew up in a musical family, studying piano, classical violin and performing with her sisters Pat and Audrey in churches. Her first recording was “When I’m Gonna Be Free” was in 1966. She then recorded for the legendary Coxsone Dodd at Studio One and her first hit came in 1967 with the title “You Don’t Love Me – No, No, No”, one of the most famous reggae hits of all-time which has been covered by countless artists around the world including Beyonce, Rihanna, Sean Paul, Wu-Tang Clan, Eve, J Millz and Lily Allen.

Over the next several years several singles were released including three: “Blue Yes Blue”, “Here’s The Key” and Long Day Short Night” on Prince Buster’s Label. In 1970, she moved to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands to explore her roots on her father’s side. She returned to Jamaica in 1987, re-recording her single You Don’t Love Me” with Steelie and Cleavie in 1991. Steelie & Cleavie’s version (which they recorded to commemorate Studio One’s 35th Anniversary) was a crossover hit in the mainstream pop charts and was picked up by Heartbeat in the U.S. King Jammy’s recording that was done the year before with Bounty Killer, Dennis Brown and Ken Boothe, under separate recording on the Greensleeves label became a dancehall smash.

In 1993, Big Beat (Atlantic Records) signed Penn to an 8-year album deal, and by the following year she was back on the charts with her re-recorded dancehall version of “You Don’t Love Me – No, No, No”. The single charted in 53 countries, was featured in advertisements for Nissan and Churchill and the album was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 1995 she produced and recorded her original track “What Do You Do?”, followed up by Delroy Williams and herself producing the album called “Come Again” on Trojan Records which sold close to 110,000 copies. Her 2000 single “Never Ever” was released on Jet Star, becoming a smash hit on BBC Radio 1.

In 2001 she was honoured with the “Martin Luther King Award” by Caribbean Images in recognition of her contribution to Jamaican music. From 2002-2004 she collaborated with top U.S. hip hop artists including John Forte of the Fugees on (“What You Gonna Do” and “Mercy pon we”) culminating in the release of the R & B Album- “Never Hustle The Music”, touring extensively across Europe. In the US, Cocoa Brovaz (“Spit Again”) was a Project on Rawkus.

aba leicester pos— H.I.M CORONATION DANCE —

w/ ABA SHANTI-I x KING EARTHQUAKE

One of the most important events in the RasTafarian calendar is the Anniversary of the Coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie I. This event took place on the 2nd November 1930.
His Imperial Majesty broke with tradition by delaying the ceremony for some time after the death of the previous ruler, Queen Zawditu.

The reasons for this are described by His Majesty in His autobiography:

„On the 17th Maskaram 1909 (27th September 1916) I was chosen heir to throne and regent, with Queen Zawditu occupying the throne; and when I had patiently carried out the work of government, for fourteen years, in my office of regent plenipotentiary, Queen Zawditu died on 24th Magabit 1922 ( 2nd April 1930) and, consequently, on the morrow I was proclaimed Emperor and assumed the throne.
„As regards the succession to throne and crown, we have read in history that, at a time when Ethiopia lived in isolation and before she had established relations with foreign countries, the prevailing custom had been, at the demise of the Emperor, for his death often to remain carefully unannounced. They would then place his son and heir on the throne and crown him immediately that very day. Only after the son’s reign and coronation had been announced by proclamation, would they give a ceremonial burial to the dead King.

„At other times, at the demise of the Emperor, the officers of the royal household would take him clandestinely and bury him, before anyone could hear about it, and on the morrow they would place his son and heir on the throne; after they had conducted the royal installation service and crowned him, the death of the father and the new reign of the son would be announced by proclamation at the same time.
But now that Ithiopia had concluded treaties of commerce and friendship with twelve foreign governments, had entered the League of Nations, and had established firm friendly relations, We were convinced that it was proper – in accordance with the practice of the most civilized governments in the case of their coronations – to invite to Our coronation the countries which had set up legations and consulates in Ithiopia. But as it would require a long time to dispatch the letters of invitation and to await the arrival of the delegates, as well as to make all the necessary preparations for the coronation, We arranged for the ceremony to be postponed for seven months.”

„My Life and Ethiopia’s Progress, Autobiography of Haile Selassie I ” – Page 171-3

The ceremony also broke with tradition in that the Empress was crowned on the same day as the Emperor and not three days later.

shaka leiceterKONTAKT Presents The Mighty Zulu Warrior JAH SHAKA + FULL SOUND SYSTEM IN SESSION.

We are very proud to confirm the return booking of the mighty zulu warrior himself… JAH SHAKA, one of the pioneers of sound system culture as we know it today and a positive inspiration for many of current sound systems around the world.

Jah Shaka has been operating a London-based, roots reggae Jamaican sound system since the early 1970s. His name is an amalgamation of the Rasta term for God and that of a Zulu warrior, Shaka Zulu.

Jah Shaka events are renowned for attracting a wide audience from all backgrounds and races. Shaka believes it to be a testament to the quality of the message that he expounds in his choice of music and his Rastafarian beliefs.

Shaka stayed true to his Rastafarian beliefs during the 1980s when many other Sound Systems had started to follow the Jamaican trend towards playing dancehall music. His refusal to compromise inspired a host of new UK reggae artists and Sound Systems such as Eastern Sher, The Disciples, Iration Steppas, Jah Warrior, Channel One Sound System, Conscious Sounds, The Rootsman and Abashanti-I. Non-reggae artists such as Basement Jaxx have also cited Jah Shaka as an influence during interviews.

On his own record label he has released music from Jamaican artists such as Max Romeo, Johnny Clarke, Bim Sherman and Prince Alla as well as UK groups such as Aswad and Dread & Fred. He has released a number of dub albums, often under the Commandments of Dub banner.

In 1980 Shaka played himself in the film Babylon (directed by Franco Rosso), operating his Sound System in a soundclash at the climax of the story. In 1989 Shaka visited Jamaica and worked with many musicians there, including King Tubby.

ABA SHANTI-I…

… Sound system operator Aba Shanti – I is a yearly highlight of London’s Notting Hill Carnival, where he’s held court since the 1970s with one of the most powerful rigs around. To his many followers, Aba is a heritage selector, synonymous with his legendary dub-plate collection, running his tracks like “Jah Lord” and “Jah Lightning And Thunder” on speakers so bass-heavy they can dislodge kidney stones. Aba was also one of the first touring sounds to acknowledge diversity in his audience, and always emphasises messages of unity and integration whilst toasting on the mic.

IRATION STEPPAS…

… Iration Steppas was originally set up by Mark Iration as a sound system in Leeds, where he played the latest sounds at blues dances, clubs and parties. With a posse of like-minded individuals Iration toured the country absorbing various sounds. With Papa Sam, the sound initially performed under the name Ital Rockers Hi Fi. Notable influences were Jah Shaka and Jah Tubby. Iration acknowledged that he was amazed by Jah Tubby’s collection of original dub plates when he secured his first acetates. A sound system clash in Leeds against Jah Shaka resulted in praise from the legendary soundman, encouraging Iration to continue in the business. In 1993, Iration linked up with Dennis Rootical (under the guise of Kitachi), performing the leftfield dope beat sound. Live appearances by the duo were greeted with enthusiasm, playing festivals and clubs around the UK. They are also acknowledged as being the first to utilize DAT recordings of their own tunes at the High Rise studio in Leeds and to mix them live. With Jack Rouble joining the group, their reputation grew and Iration Steppas released the classic „Scud Missile” in 1993. The single was met with enthusiasm and demand led to the discomix being re-pressed three times before eventually being deleted. The initial hit was followed by the equally popular 12-inch discomix, „Mystical Warrior”. Acclaimed by the media as Jah Shaka’s „enlightened offspring”, they followed the hit with two 10-inch releases, „Reminiscence Dub” and „Killimanjaro” both of which were featured on their debut album. As Kitachi they released three dope beat singles, „Spirit”, „Scratch Remix” and „Heavyweight”. The new wave of dub followers can also discover many specials recorded for a variety of 90s-style dub compilations, including Macro Dub Infection, Dubhead Volumes One and Two, Club Meets Dub and Dope On Plastic.

MAASAI WARIOR SOUND…

Maasai Warrior are a Sound System based In Bristol.
Their first debut was in 2010 at St Pauls Carnival (Bristol) on Argyle Rd. Shortly after playing regular sessions at the Black Swan with promotions such as Bristol Dub Club and Stepping Promotion. Up until July 2012 they started to play sessions outside of Bristol, the first city being Walsall, then in other cities after such as London, Birmingham, Leicester, etc. In December they first played outside England with a session in Grenoble, France.
As the sound progresses they started to play at more sessions around UK and In Europe with sounds such as Jah Lokko, King Alpha, O.B.F, Word Sound & Power, Young Warrior, Freedom Masses, Jah Youth, Roots Collective, Lion Youth, Equal Brothers, Roots Injection, Emperorfari and many more, as well as DJ sets with / on Instrument Of Jah, Roots Meditation, Mo Kalamity, Dubkasm, Aba Shanti-i, Kanka etc.
