Beam Up – “Frankie/Helden” (45seven)

457a

This guy we’ve already introduced to you in our reviews (http://dubmassive.org/6393/beam-up-astronomy-dubhanabi-dub-7), we appreciate him for the approach to music production, inspired by 70s dub classics. On his newest release, thanks to 45seven label, he presents us two tracks – “Frankie” and “Helden”, in which he shows what is true dub for him. Echoes, reverbs, flying percussions, snippets of melodies in sound space – the essence of dub in original style!

“Rudebwoy Corporation” EP (Lion’s Den)

“Rudebwoy Corporation” EP (Lion’s Den)

LIONS4WD001_frontEvery time I hear about Lion’s Den’s new release I wonder what they will surprise me this time. I got used to guests in the form of interesting  vocalists and amazing, creative producers (often less known). This time they join forces with Italian label 4Weed and give us 12” with 6 heavy productions. Side A is 3 tunes with music of Dub All Sense, who has created very heavy riddims. On vocals we have Mr Williamz (already known, among others, from cooperation with Mungos Hi Fi) with incredibly strong “Haffi Bun”; MrDill Lion Warriah from Italy in “My Story” has showed how to flow over a typical dub roller. Longfingah in “Old Shatterhand” proves his high form. Side B are remixes that will make smile on the faces of all dubheads. At the beginning we get version from French Welders Hi Fi – “Haffi Bun” is even stronger than the original, which seemed impossible … Another surprise is the remix by Zion Train – in “Another story“, in his style, with exposed bass, he lift us above the orbit. At the end we get a remix by Jambassa from Italy, who used to work a lot in the netlabel Aquietbump. Here they present amazing tune, slightly embedded in the style of minimal dub.

Sekkleman ft Baptiste & Serocee – “Lightman / 18 Dromilly Ave” (Moonshine Recordings)

Sekkleman ft Baptiste & Serocee – “Lightman / 18 Dromilly Ave” (Moonshine Recordings)

ms018-fb-headerMoonshine Recordings label explores dub all over the world – this time invites to a journey to Australia, where extraordinary producer Sekkleman comes from. Also known as Livewire, he mostly makes jungle and a lot of remixes. On the Moonshine’s release he shows his new face, inspired by dub. In conjunction with vocal of Baptiste, known among others from cooperation with Kanka, we get a powerful tune with a fast, rhythmic chat, also we get a remix additionally. The second track of the release is “18 Dromilly Ave” – joined forces of Sekkleman with MCs Serocee and Baptiste give a brilliant effect. In the tune they pay tribute to King Tubby, particularly to his studio, which was located at 18th Ave Dromilly. I have the impression that if King Tubby lived in our times, his dubs would sound like these one. In addition we also have a dub version, where you can hear echoes of King Tubby productions.

The Grinders – “Dub Forces in Session”

The Grinders – “Dub Forces in Session”

DTB010Crazy duo of The Grinders is back in action! Some time ago we wrote about their album (http://dubmassive.org/8254/the-grinders-under-arrest) and this time they take us to a journey of music and film. The whole concept of the album is related to the legendary film “Star Wars“, so every fan of this saga must hear how dub competes with well-known motifs. A rub a dub “Original Lord Vader” opens the EP, then we are attacked by a quite dark “Digital Vader”, slightly falling into ragga climates. In “Ganja force” we are hit by a heavy bass, a dub atmosphere and the melody of  “imperial march“. At the end we get a “Don’t mess with Jabba,” a digital reggae with vocals by Jabba. To sum up –  I have never been a fan of the “Star Wars“, but this interpretation of the topic convinces me to catch up on watching.

Danny Red – “Rasta We Rasta” (Youth&Truth)

Danny Red – “Rasta We Rasta” (Youth&Truth)

Danny_Red-Rasta_We_RastaA new, Belgian label Youth & Truth has started its activity forcefully by releasing 12” “Rasta We Rasta”. Forward Fever is responsible for the production, thanks to Dub Fi Youth crew he can show his music to the world and his riddim is a great prove, that he knows how to satisfy dubheads. On the vocal we have great Danny Red and his anthem “Rasta We Rasta” even before releasing this single had become a killer tune in Belgium. The second vocalist on this 12” is Idren Natural, who nicely fits into the riddim in his own style. We also get a version with with a beautiful part of trumpet performed by Jamma Dim form Reservoir Dub, which simply floored me. At the end we have a pure version, in which we can listen to many tasteful sounds. Congratulations for Forward Fever and label crew for this great debut!

GuerillJah Productions – “Dub Minded” Riddim Sampler

GuerillJah Productions – “Dub Minded” Riddim Sampler

Dub Minded Riddim Sampler Cover FrontOn 17th of December there was a premiere of riddim album by duo Hardy Digital & Longfingah, who usually work in Berlin and release their productions in their own label GuerillJah Productions. The newest riddim is a solid steppers with a strong bass line and drums that, in connection, give us a tough tune which doesn’t bore after listening to it 7 times. The people responsible for vocals are aforementioned Longfingah – known for cooperation i.a. with Lion’s Den, Illbilly Hitec, able to mix singing and chatting in a good style, Joseph B. Grant – a Jamaican veteran that has been creating i.a. with Still Cool, known from a hit “To be poor is a crime” released by Jah Shaka, praising The Highest One on GuerillJah rhythm making one of the best versions. French Rosa Shanti proves that woman voice is a real pearl when joined with dub music, another French artist Jahjah Man chats lively, just like Tonto Addi who has ragamuffin in his blood. On the end there are 2 versions – one by George Palmer, whose timbre is similar to Pupajim’s and the second one is chatted in Bosnian by Aca Pachuli. To sum up – keep up with GuerillJah productions and the German scene, which holds a lot of talents.

Archetype Records presents Violinbwoy – “Shiver Shashamane”

Archetype Records presents Violinbwoy – “Shiver Shashamane”

10464228_320296294800729_224578576440448909_nArchetype Records from France is another relatively new label in a dub world and they has released 7” with our countryman Violinbowy, containing heavyweight dubwise at its best. The A side with “Shiver Shashamane” is a original riddim with resonating bass, accompanied by violin melody. The track is 4 minutes long with a lot of tasteful themes. The B side is a dub version, where violin is on the background but when it comes, goose bumps appears on the whole body. The attention is also attracted by the cover and clip – animation created strictly for this tune, perfectly matched with music. “Must have” release for all maniacs of heavyweight dub!

Ps. Also check out the first release from Archetype – “Nemesis” by Haspra, also heavy tune which breaks Babylon walls!

Kalina in Dub – “Second hand”

Kalina in Dub – “Second hand”

kalinaIn Poland there is not too much dub live acts so I wonder why – when such project appears – it’s not mentioned almost anywhere. So I want to break the silence today introducing a project by Kalina – a man, who played in a reggae band Arkapark, a jungle Hajer Boss and a punk Hercklekot. He describes himself as a producer, author, lyricist and vocalist. Kalina in Dub is his first solo project. On our scene there are a very few people like him – “one man army” living with music. He loves dub so much that he decided to finalise the project no matter what.

Album “Second hand” contains 14 tunes (remixes to be more precise), where the common denominator is dub in its wide meaning. The album is opened by “Ktoś czeka”, where Kalina serves us Asian-inspired melodies introducing to a meditative state, just like in “Dub” – that tune by Jamal gains power in the Kalina’s remix with his beautiful melodica. The next track is remix of Dub Syndicate “Fire Burning” with a lot of echoes and effects – honey for the ears. There is a surprise – a guest appears on the album and it’s Bajka from Fire In The Hole in the tune originally recorded for Hajer Boss but on a dub rhythm, what makes me wonder why she doesn’t appear on dub productions too often. This tune also has a beautiful saxophone part recorded by Janusz Makowski. In the 5th track Kalina faced a Polish reggae legend: Izrael – “See I&I” is a very good version stepping into dubstep climate, with a charming melodica. In the next remix he meets another legend, this time an UK dub one – Alpha&Omega and “Meditation Rock” is one of my favourites from the album, you have to check out how he spiced up that seemingly calm tune. When we approach the half of the album dubstep climate begins to rule, a good examples are “W Korbielowie” and a classic by Bob Marley “Mr Brown”, reminding me of Radikal Guru’s productions – a real soundsystem killer. The next tune is “Nie ma nic” – a remix of Hecklekot, a punk band where he was the vocalist. Here we get a solid dub with a tough bass line, spacial effects and strong lyrics, just like in “Na szczycie” by Grubson. Next we head to “Święty szczyt” (The Holy Summit), a classic track by Kryzys, where Kalina sings a very important for some people lyric that perfectly fits the music. We are getting closer to the end and we get another classic tune of a certain generation – “Centrala” by Brygada Kryzys (my next favourite). The vocals are great and the composition is so varied that after you hear it once you know you will come back to it a lot of times. The last track is “Słoneczko” by Konopians – I really like the original version but I miss something here – maybe too few vocals.

To sum up – if you haven’t heard of Kalina you need to catch up and – if possible – see him live, as it’s best to listen to music like that live, when the artist can afford much more. If you like a lot of bass, full range of effects and echoes then you have to check this album!
