“Journey to Jah” in Polish cinemas

“Journey to Jah” in Polish cinemas

posterFrom 26th of September Polish art cinemas will be playing a documentary of Noël Dernesch and Moritz Springer “Journey to Jah”. So far its projections has been performed during summer festivals like Ostróda Reggae Festival or Regałowisko. Now – thanks to Against Gravity – it will be possible to see it across Poland.

Gentleman i Albarosie are two big names of modern, European reggae scene, very popular in our country. When I was very fresh disciple of reggae phenomenon I was discovering them through Gentleman’s music, whose videoclip I hit watching German music channel Viva. Since today I like to get back to his album “Journey to Jah”. In the movie both musicians show us Jamaica with its culture, full of contrasts. We get to know stories about their way from western world to the small, fascinating island, which has left such great musical and cultural legacy to the world.

About movie

“Journey to Jah” paints a varied picture of the importance and spiritual meaning of reggae on the Caribbean island, where music is used to fight violence, sexism and poverty. As Alborosie says, “God lives here, but Satan too”. For seven years, filmmakers Noël Dernesch and Moritz Springer followed the two “Jamaicanized” artists on their flight from Western consumerism and their search for the roots of the Rastafarians and reggae music, and for a way to give meaning to their lives. Several musicians on the island support them along the way. They play together on the streets and are faced with the joyful, but also harsh reality of life on the island. Footage focusing on their lives as musicians is interspersed with interviews and stylized montages of scenes from everyday life. The result is a kaleidoscopic impression of a world where music serves as a path to unity.

Free track from Unit 137 – “Forever More” (onlyjoe feat. Ghost Writerz)

Free track from Unit 137 – “Forever More” (onlyjoe feat. Ghost Writerz)

Unit 137 gives us a free tune. “Revolution” riddim, originally created and performed by the onlyjoe band, gets a new vocal cut by the Ghost Writerz – the duo of Jason ‘Jimmy Screech’ Bradshaw and Harry ‘Sleepy Time Ghost’ Metcalfe. Sleepy is known for several originals & remixes on Unit 137, Jimmy is an MC, who works well as both rapper and singjay – which can be heard in this nice, melodic tune.

Support for Channel One Sound System

Support for Channel One Sound System

channelChannel One Sound System can be rejected from Notting Hill Carnival, after 32 years of playing there (20 years in the same spot). Because of objections from local residents, Westminster Council’s licensing committee can deny them a license to play – which, in turn, can cause Channel One’s absence at festival this year. The objections are:

  • excessive volume resulting in migraines
  • having to relocate pets because of the bass
  • low level damage to property
  • urination on property, broken glass etc.
  • congestion of people traffic
  • impact on public safety, crime and disorder

You may say – “OK, yes, this seems seriously, maybe people want some peace”. But while I’m reading this objections list I can’t belive, how ridiculous they are in the context of Channel One’s sound system presence. In principle, these points can apply to every street festival dedicated to music and fun. There is loud, always someone will break some glass and will be pissing on the wall. Yes, in a million crowd you can find such people.

Notting Hill Carnival has started 48 years ago – so it is not new thing which suddenly surprise you with its grand scale. THOUSANDS of people flowing through whole area, plenty of sound systems, food stands, parades, music, fun, next thousands of people trying to move from point A to B. Full of everything, everywhere.

So I really don’t know how removing this one sound system can help these residents. Magically, thousands of people will lost, there will be no traffic, the order will be back? I know that not everyone can have a good time at carnival, but it takes two days and ends at 7PM, come on – it is not one week of 24h rave party next to your window!

If someone want to support Channel One – there is a petition available here: https://www.change.org/petitions/westminster-council-keep-channel-one-sound-system-at-notting-hill-carnival

Dubowy Uniwersytet Reggae na Ostróda Reggae Festiwal 2014

Dubowy Uniwersytet Reggae na Ostróda Reggae Festiwal 2014

katzAs an official medial partner of Ostróda Reggae Festival we would like to invite you to an extraordinary event. In the rich schedule of the party (14-17.08) education and film projections will be present as always in the Reggae University amphitheater. One of the planned happening is a meeting with David Katz, famous British journalist and writer. On 15.08 he will present illustrated with unique multimedia lecture entitled “Dub revolution: genesis of the most impactful Jamaican musical invention”. David is an author of books “People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry”, “Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae” and “Caribbean Lives: Jimmy Cliff”. His articles and photos were published in such magazines as Mojo, The Guardian, The Independent, The Telegraph or Riddim. David releases records, chips in films, lectures on universities. His monthly DJ parties “Dub Me Always” in The Ritzy in Brixton are a firm element of London night life and he is one of the crucial reggae history specialists in the world.

Katz supported i.a. Lee Scratch Perry in Royal Festival Hall, Mad Professor in Momo’s Kemia Bar and Horace Andy, Aswad, Rico in Jazz Café. He has played with Ras Kush from Black Redemption Sound System in New Jork and Rio de Janeiro. Carried public debates with Bunny Wailer, Rita Marley, Chris Blackwell, King Jammy, Bunny Lee, Horace Andy, The Skatalities, Derrick Morgan and many others on festivals like Rototom Sunsplash and Reggae Geel. Presented scientific works about reggae on University of the West Indies on Jamaica and on universities in Brazil and Italy.
During the last sixty or more years, Jamaican popular music has rarely been in a standstill and often has been flourished with innovations of a group of involved practitioners, who has constantly been pushing it to the new tracks. Although it took a while for the outside world to notice the sounds from that Caribbean island, and even more to understand them, it’s an undeniable fact that during the last few decades Jamaica has enormously influenced the musical technique and practice all over the world. Dub appeared to be the most influential reggae subgenre. Without dub novelties of trailblazing Jamaican sound engineers and producers, rap would never become the most popular genre of popular music and various forms of dance music powered by technology probably would never be created. For sure you would not be listening to dubstep, which is popular now in many countries. So, who exactly is responsible for dub? What was the initial purpose that it served and how did it change over the time? Is dub a constant form or does it change its shape?
15.08 (friday), 12.00, free entry

Two great reissues of dub vibes from 90s – Disicples and Aba Shanti-I.

Two great reissues of dub vibes from 90s – Disicples and Aba Shanti-I.

Two great reissues have been released recently, both of them are from my favorite period in dub music – 90s. First 12” was prepared by Jah Roots Hi Fi and they picked Disciples classics – “Positive vibration” and “Humble Lion” with Mark Iration. What to say, serious dub vibes with dense and heavy atmosphere.

Second one is one of the first Aba Shanti-I releases – “Positive vibration” representing very characteristic roots style of Earth Rocker, sound of Jah lighting and thunder, literally!

Don’t miss these two!
