[Review] “Dub Revolution” series – Indica Dubs meets Forward Fever, Crucial Alphonso, Echo Vault

IMG_9039The next triple 7” set from Indica Dubs was inspired by Belgium “Dub Revolution” event, where he performed in November 2015. Sukh invited three talented producers from this growing scene. Forward Fever has already co-operated with him on previous releases, here they prepared a mystical and monumental instrumental dub “Jah Lead Us” with old-school sounds of strings and horns. “Oluwa” with Crucial Alphonso is a massive, rolling steppers with a strong, main theme. The last one – “Judgement Dub” with Echo Vault is the fastest one, also in a heavyweight style. The nice things is that all three 7” are different but have a common mood – mystical, deep and heavy dub, where melodies are built mainly with horns and strings sounds.

Tuff vibes, highly recommended for all dubheads!

[Review] “Love & Understanding” – Henry & Louis f. Johnny Clarke (ZamZam Sounds)

[Review] “Love & Understanding” – Henry & Louis f. Johnny Clarke (ZamZam Sounds)

zam40_1200pixwZamZam 40 comes with the legendary Jamaican roots singer Johnny Clarke. The people responsible for this version are also an institution – Henry & Louis (Jack Lundie and Andy Scholes) are one of the Bristol icons of ‘Bristol sound’. This crew has started their musical journey in 1988, forming 2Kings label in 1990. A heavily edited version of “Love and Understanding” was released on their “Time Will Tell” LP; this release is the first time the full vocal and full dub version have been heard in all their glory.

The vocal part from this release comes from 1996 when they travelled to Jamaica. The riddim is very moody and subtle, with clipped horns and hypnotic vibe; the dub version goes even further, stripped to pounding bassline percussion hits and vocal snippets with long delays.

A truly extraordinary, hypnotic dub experience with the specific 90s sound.

[Review] “Shaka’s Truth” / “Atha Dub” – Compa (ZamZam Sounds)

[Review] “Shaka’s Truth” / “Atha Dub” – Compa (ZamZam Sounds)

zam39_1200pixwAnother pearl for deep, dubstep and very-very-very low frequencies lovers out of ZamZam Sounds. Compa’s first release for this label is a real journey into a dark bass valley. The A side with “Shaka’s Truth” brings us mystical vibes on a broken rhythm with vocal samples and synth melodies. On the flip side we  get pounding and crushing riddim with delays and flying, distorted snares. Above sweeping low frequencies, melodies from outer space are  appearing and vanishing into the dark.

Two tracks for taking you into another dimension.

[Review] Beam Up – “Gerrup/Vibin”

[Review] Beam Up – “Gerrup/Vibin”

a2651940175_16We’ve been writing a couple of times about this talented producer (http://dubmassive.org/en/tag/beam-up/), and the new 7″ made me realize that music has no borders. Every time I get a message from Beam Up about an upcoming release I wonder what way he took and how he is going to surprise me but the newest one just brought me up short. ‘Gerrup’ starts with light, roots samples to take us into the land of breakbeat in a modern flavour with a horns section, all of this mixed up with a dub sauce. The B side of the extraordinary 7″ is ‘Vibin’ – a stepped-up version of the A side falling into jungle a bit, but in a light form, reminding of the style’s classics. This production confirms Beam Up’s class without a doubt!

“My Music” by Dubkasm in dub

“My Music” by Dubkasm in dub

dubkasmTwo new releases from ZamZam Sounds are coming. Waiting for them we’re getting back to this one from the end of 2015. Original Dubkasm’s “My Music” with great vocal and lyrics by Solo Banton was really well acclaimed. But this tune came out without a dub version.  ZamZam crew were in touch with Dubkasm for some time and this was really nice occasion to bring some vibes together. This 7” contains not only the dub version of “My Music”, but also another one for “Never Let I Down” (also from “My Music” EP). Musically Dubkasm gives us absolutely sophisticated, hi-fi sounds with crystal clear, deep reverbs and echoes mixed with flying vocal snippets; all based on raw drum&bass foundation. Excellent art of dub for contemplative listening.

Alter Echo & E3 feat. Rider Shafique – “Heights”/”The Sound Tonight” (ZamZam Sounds)

Alter Echo & E3 feat. Rider Shafique – “Heights”/”The Sound Tonight” (ZamZam Sounds)

zamzamWelcome to the world of psychedelic dub! This 7” from ZamZam Sounds comes with Alter Echo & E3 moody and heavy, deep steppers riddim, full of dark, mysterious pads,  echoes, resonating bass and ricocheting snares. But this dense atmosphere is multiplied thanks to excellent vocals of Rider Shafique of Bristol’s esoteric Young Echo crew. His hypnotic, declamation-style flow takes us to some higher regions of consciousness, where the words are beaten into your mind with bass and kicks.
