Rockin’ in Babylon with Ghetto Priest & Positive Thursdays in Dub

Rockin’ in Babylon with Ghetto Priest & Positive Thursdays in Dub

Positive Thursdays and HolyVooDou Music invite you to watch the unique music document “Rockin ‘in Babylon!” As Ghetto Priest says “Who are we without a story?”

It started with a recording session in Jinx Recording Studio and unexpectedly ended on telling the fascinating story of Wroclaw-based band. “Rockin ‘in Babylon’ is a story that proves that seemingly crazy ideas can become a reality. This humble and personal story that began long before this film. Meeting and working in the studio with Ghetto Priest, one of the most flamboyant and creative performers to have emerged on the UK reggae scene that works with Asian Dub Foundation and Adrian Sherwood it’s a prove that you always need to believe in what you doing. The main role in this movie plays music without unnecessary words.

The band was formed in 2011 as a natural extension of the oldest programs about reggae in Poland – Positive Thursdays, broadcast continuously since 2006. The need of the moment, as well as a passion for dub, initially created a project that, with time expanded by new members and eventually as a live act (selector and brass section) start playing regular gigs. 2015 was a breakthrough year for Positive Thursdays in DUB. With the passage of time, next step was about to take so DJ live act turned into a full-fledged band.  However the main goal has not been changed – it still shows the broad spectrum of reggae and dub, which Wroclaw-based group presents a unique and conscious way.

The soundtrack features rearranged versions of the original songs, most of which will be on the new Ghetto Priest album “Every Man For Every Man,” which will be released on RamRock Records, and produced by Adrian Sherwood (On U Sound).

Mistyczna podróż muzyczna. Rozmowa z Radikal Guru – twórcą radykalnie dobrym

Mistyczna podróż muzyczna. Rozmowa z Radikal Guru – twórcą radykalnie dobrym

Wbrew pozorom harmonijna i zgodna z naturą.

To dobrze przeczuwałam! Każdy z nas potrzebuje czasu, by dojrzeć muzycznie.

Uff, to dobrze.

No i oczywiście dub i reggae, które mielę dosyć często.

Niejeden jechał z kamerą do Londynu, by nagrać kultowe, dub’ owe sound systemy.

Ja z kolei przeniosłam Twoje dźwięki do swojego mieszkania. Kilka dni temu zamówiłam najnowszy album na czarnym krążku. Przedobry. Co prawda nie mam gramofonu, ale to będzie idealny pretekst, by w końcu go kupić.

Zapraszam więc do słuchania, a już 16 lutego wychodzi kolejny singiel Digitalizer Riddim EP.

Okej, to zaczynam odliczać dni!

Support for Channel One Sound System

Support for Channel One Sound System

channelChannel One Sound System can be rejected from Notting Hill Carnival, after 32 years of playing there (20 years in the same spot). Because of objections from local residents, Westminster Council’s licensing committee can deny them a license to play – which, in turn, can cause Channel One’s absence at festival this year. The objections are:

  • excessive volume resulting in migraines
  • having to relocate pets because of the bass
  • low level damage to property
  • urination on property, broken glass etc.
  • congestion of people traffic
  • impact on public safety, crime and disorder

You may say – “OK, yes, this seems seriously, maybe people want some peace”. But while I’m reading this objections list I can’t belive, how ridiculous they are in the context of Channel One’s sound system presence. In principle, these points can apply to every street festival dedicated to music and fun. There is loud, always someone will break some glass and will be pissing on the wall. Yes, in a million crowd you can find such people.

Notting Hill Carnival has started 48 years ago – so it is not new thing which suddenly surprise you with its grand scale. THOUSANDS of people flowing through whole area, plenty of sound systems, food stands, parades, music, fun, next thousands of people trying to move from point A to B. Full of everything, everywhere.

So I really don’t know how removing this one sound system can help these residents. Magically, thousands of people will lost, there will be no traffic, the order will be back? I know that not everyone can have a good time at carnival, but it takes two days and ends at 7PM, come on – it is not one week of 24h rave party next to your window!

If someone want to support Channel One – there is a petition available here: https://www.change.org/petitions/westminster-council-keep-channel-one-sound-system-at-notting-hill-carnival

Netlabel report – March 2014

Netlabel report – March 2014

RSM Vs Dubophonic All-Stars - Time for Tea (front)I will start the march overview with Dubophonic netlabel which deigned us with 2 releases. The first one is Sunjaman with EP “Outta Here” and the second one is Red Star Martyrs & Dubophonic All Stars. Sunjaman is a producer from Greece living in Athens, who serves us a mixture of jungle, steppers and rootstep styles – everything in a dub sauce. However, Red Star Martyrs alongside Dubophonic All Stars interested me much more. They created a relaxing music full of chill-out, on the album you can hear some musicians i.a. from Jamaica. Every composition is a different story, although there are various versions of the same tracks. The saxophone section in “Spanish Town Tea” gets us to the far orient and the “Te Espanol” with the acoustic guitar and tough bass gives an uncommon, positive effect.

Another netlabel with two releases is Dubkey, both of them straight from UK. The first one is Unitone Soundimentional. For unitune it’s the first album released on a netlabel and the music on it is a solid dub roller with roots and steppers. Hits like “Chatty Mouth” sung by Zebby Blax could surely rule on sound systems, also the “What You Gunna Say” sung by Hatta Benji deserves a huge applause. To be honest, the whole album can without doubt appear on playlists all over the world. I Wish Unitone to release more often or release something on vinyl. As an encouragement you should see video clip to “Let Jah Be Your Guide” by Sis Dinah.

dubkey016-400The second album is “Babylon Institution” produced by Ashley, an old trouper if it’s up to netlabels. He offers us a trip in climates close to Scientist or Roots Radics – the instrumental dub. Truly amazing music and the admiration of the fact that he creates it all alone force us to listen to this artwork.

March has been successful for netlabel releases – album “Evening News in dub” from netlabel Dubbhism proves it. From the very beginning we are attacked by an element hard to tame: ska, rocksteady and roots reggae straight from Holland with a lot of dub. Nice vocals and marvelous winds are decoration of 5 tunes, plus an well exposed bass – what more could you want!!! It’s my favorite netlabel release this year, although  i am not a big fan of ska, that album took my heart.

On the end i left ODG netlabel and album Mayd Hubb vs Full Dub – french crews known to the wide audience. It contains 6 tracks that are a quintessence of French dub – experimental, specific approach to the dub music, which has a lot of fans.

Netlabel report is back

Netlabel report is back

That’s right – it’s been a long time since the last netlabel report, but it’s past now – we are back with this insightful cycle.

Koncrete_Roots_frontI track on-going netlabel freshies and to be honest the album I am going to write about is on such a high level, that it could be released on CD or vinyl. I am talking about Koncrete Dub – Dub Ina Midlands from Dubophonic netlabel. Only one man – Thomas Kenney from Leicestershire in East Midlands in England – is responsible for this project. He has been producing music since he’s been a teenager – first hiphop and grime, to move on to dub. Style of Koncrete Roots could be described as deep rootical dub conjoined with steppers and electro dub with its own original style – especially visible when he uses classic reggae themes. The opening tune wins my heart with a great prelude and the bass playing Sleng Teng rhythm. “River Jordan” calmly leads us to “Sound Killah”| – a good steppers, to destroy the system in “Inity Step”.

00 - Toy Story - CoverThe next release is ART – X Toy Story from Original Dub Gathering netlabel. Generally, all of their releases are very good. It’s the same this time – Art X is a member of OnDubGround crew, who is responsible i.a. for playing on melodica. Listening, how easy he plays sounds there is no wonder that artists like Brain Damage made their tunes available for him. That tune is amazing for me and it’s just a matter of time for Art X to start appearing on many releases (not only netlabel ones). Besides the great Radical Plan version we also have tunes from groups connected to ODG label like Dawa HiFi or Panda Dub – discovery of the previous year for many. With such a beautiful melodica like that there is no time to write – the only thing to do is to listen to these gorgeous sounds.

Thus we have our netlabel report back on dubmassive.org. All that’s left is to wait to see what February is going to bring in the virtual world of dub music.

Summary of 2013

Summary of 2013

2013 is over. For me, musically there were a lot of interesting things. And current period is good for various summaries, so here we go. This is rather my subjective top a top – a look at past 12 months from the perspective of sound system maniac.

Release of the year – single, EP etc.

This year was full of interesting releases and most important of all – vinyl is still alive. We got “Love Jah”, got some great reissues from Disciples, Alpha & Omega, great stuff from Tuff Scout, Iroko, Jah Shaka’s roots and the dub rollers from O.B.F. Youth fared very well (Alpha Steppa, Will Tee), the great elderly – such as Aba Shanti-I – also did not disappoint. But, but, there was one such number that electrified audiences wherever was played as the last tune. When this release was announced, many hearts stopped beating for a while, later to significantly speed up. And when this vinyl showed up, first series sold out in one night .. as I live I do not remember such interest in a new dub/reggae release. And most important of all – it is an amazing tune with brass section that gets you into total euphoria.

The victory in 2013 can only belong to “Victory” by Dubkasm!

Event of the year

main_UNOD-WEEKENDER-A3-POSTER-PROPOSALLooking at the past year certainly we cannot forget about very good editions of many festivals. But as soon as information about the United Nations of Dub Weekender came up – I already knew. I knew where absolutely, 200% must be. Line-up caused heart attack in every sound system fan, but now, after the party I know it was only one factor – at European festivals there is also a lot of amazing sound system scenes. But in Prestatyn I got something else – 24 hours a day existence with the sound system culture – with its creators and fans. You sleep 3 minutes away from the main arena, getting up in the morning and going to the only shop in the area you pass scoops, which are just transported to the venue; in the hall another sound is setting up and doing a sound check, meanwhile the Selector ‘s Arena is already running. Later you’re going to the main dance and next to you, at 0 Celsius degrees, people are proudly stepping in shorts and with towels, ready for sweat and solid skanking. In the morning, full hall is yelling “one more tune “. Undeterred by the end of the event and the cold aura, you continue the fun on a spontaneous party on the lawn next to the sleeping rooms, where as a sound system acts iPod docking station. You go to bed at 7AM, thinking that perhaps tomorrow you’ll wake up at 7PM, but no – in full readiness, at 12AM you are cruising on the arena and watching another sound systems preperaing.

Yes – in Prestatyn I felt that I was surrounded by people like me, I was a part of a spontaneously created tribe 🙂

Musically – what was going on… until today I have goose-bumps when I recall it.

A special place in my heart I have for Steppa Warriors birthday, which we celebrated with Channel One. It was an amazing and unforgettable experience, and when Mikey and  Ras Kayleb started to play dubplates, they swept me off my feet.

Release of the year – LP

artworks-000056251182-q67rbz-t500x500Here I had a dilemma, but finally the first place goes to Brain Damage meets Vibronics – “Empire Soldiers”. For brave topic of this concept – album, for successful cooperation of two dub powers. And, last but not least, it is such a good release – from beautiful songs ( “Letter Home” ! ) to solid steppers, with lot of beautiful melodies.

Second place , which I have to mention, goes to the long-awaited Iration Steppas LP “In The Dub Arena”. This release is not such “go-ahead” as “Empire Soldiers”, but there is a plenty of my favorite sounds from High Rise Studio on it, “Tick Tock” smashes me every time and it has this brilliant, cartoonish style insert!

In addition to the above-mentioned, there were other dub albums worth recommendation like the Dub Dynasty – “Unrelenting force”, Radikal Guru’s “Subconscious” or Weeding Dub with “Inna Digital Age”.

And shortly about the Polish yard – our scene is still developing, we had Iration Steppas, Channel One, Jah Shaka and more, there is more and more sound system sessions with two and more sound systems. It is pretty well and I look into the future with hope.

Hello 2014, be as good as 2013!
