Mungo\’s Hi Fi

[Review] Mungo’s Hi Fi ft Johnny Clarke – “Rain keeps falling” (Scotch Bonnet Records)

[Review] Mungo’s Hi Fi ft Johnny Clarke – “Rain keeps falling” (Scotch Bonnet Records)

A very nice “gift” for Record Store Day 2017 has come from Mungo’s Hi Fi family. Old-school vibes provided by an original riddim with the “flying cymbals” drum pattern with a wonderful, nostalgic vocal of Johny Clarke, singing about the Glaswegian weather.

The spirit of King Tubby is flowing through the speakers from the very beginning and gets a full effect in the dub version.

[Review] Scotch Bonnet Records Presents

[Review] Scotch Bonnet Records Presents

Always active Mungo’s Hi-Fi has recently released a lot of good stuff. Starting from a new Scrub a Dub 7” we’re diving into dubstep area. Von D presents a deep and mystical tune with crucial words about analog vs digital sound [holy words for all purists ;)] perfectly mixed into the track. On the flip side we have Egoless with a ruff beat. A heavy&dark release, for true sub frequencies lovers.

Next 7” brings a modern, punchy, bass style ragga from Danny T & Tradesman and Parly B.

https://soundcloud.com/scotchbonnetrecords/galang

The last 7” is a wonderful, vintage relick of 1988 production by Naturally “Sunny Gets Blue”. Made by Stalawa and released in this French producer’s own label Foreign Mind, the track comes with great vocals by London MC Dark Angel.

This 7” is distributed by Scotch Bonnet Records.

Last but not least – a full length album, a compilation of various artists that have influenced Mungo’s Hi-Fi. Some tracks released, some dubplates, some new ones – but all highly energetic and full of vibe. If you love all kind of reggae flavors and how this music impacts modern producers, then you will love this album – from an excellent “Das Model” dub by Prince Fatty, trough rub-a-dub and old-school vibes like Stalawa’s “Buss Shot” and Naram’s “Golden Rule”, ending on murderous versions (“Dub Controller”!) and heavy pumping riddims like “Dub Invasion”. This is highly powerful stuff with energizing effect proven – I usually listen to LPs during long running and I ran almost 30 minutes extra just rewinding some tunes again and again…

[Release info] Parly B – “This is digital” EP (Scotch Bonnet)

[Release info] Parly B – “This is digital” EP (Scotch Bonnet)

SCOBNET003-CD_front_1500New digital boomshot from Mungo’s Hi-Fi camp – Parly B in full-flavoured release!

“Parly B first held the mic as a teenager in the 90s, inspired by dancehall legends such as Capleton, Papa San and Cutty Ranks. He got involved with his local scene in Doncaster mainly hosting Jungle nights, so he is as much hi fiat home in a rave as in a dancehall session. In fact, he only burst into the dub and reggae scene relatively recently, but with a vibe and distinctive sound that producers are hungry for, so he has quickly amassed a large catalogue. Scotch Bonnet Records felt it was time to put together a collection of his work on the label and it was hard to decide what to leave out.

Indubitably the nicest rudeboy you are likely to meet.”

[Release info] Mungo’s Hi Fi – “African ting riddim” (Dumbarton Rock)

[Release info] Mungo’s Hi Fi – “African ting riddim” (Dumbarton Rock)

DUMBY01_ANew 7” from Mungo’s Hi-Fi camp, this the first release from new label Dumbarton Rock.

“Dumbarton Rock is a brand new rub-a-dub label which pays homage to the foundation masters while bringing a breath of fresh air to them. It is named after the ancient capital of Alt Clud, the last stronghold of the Britons, frequented by King Arthur, Merlin and St Mungo. Now Mungo has returned with some crucial cuts brought back from Jamaica, featuring live instruments, tape mastering and vocalists with vibes. Ranking Joe, Shanti D, Ranking Levy and Cheshire Cat set a torch to vanity and greed.
The two 7” singles are limited to a 500 hand numbered press. They will only be shipped direct from Scotland www.scotchbonnet.net – no digital, vinyl only, no repress.”

[Review] Mungo’s Hi Fi feat. YT – “No Wata Down Ting”

[Review] Mungo’s Hi Fi feat. YT – “No Wata Down Ting”

SCOBLP006_cover_1500This is it! After so many great collaborations, YT and Mungo’s Hi-Fi released a LP. Ten tracks full of rub-a-dub and reggae vibe sound just excellent. It can’t be otherwise when Prince Fatty is invited to cooperation – warm but powerful basslines (“Raggamuffin girl”!) and an analogue flavour are guaranteed. Besides YT we hear also two legends – Johnny Osbourne and Little John – and the tracks with these two are my favourites. Especially “No Wata Down Ting” sounds great, combining an old-school style with a modern beat. Back to YT – he proves with this LP, that he is a complete artist. Vocally he is moving smoothly between fast chatting and singing, also lyrically he is not afraid to touch many topics. Musically he fits in with reggae vibe (brilliant “Work to do”), not to mention rub-a-dub/dancehall and even jazz-like ska (“Bumpercart”). An excellent album for pleasurable listening.

[Review] Radikal Guru “Stay Calm” ft. YT (Mungo’s Hi-Fi remix) / “Earthwalker” (Sekkleman remix) – Moonshine Recordings

[Review] Radikal Guru “Stay Calm” ft. YT (Mungo’s Hi-Fi remix) / “Earthwalker” (Sekkleman remix) – Moonshine Recordings

MS024DI’m very glad, that Sekkleman is appearing in Moonshine Recordings again! The release number 24 from this label contains two remixes of Radikal Guru’s tracks and Australian producer took “Earthwalker” on. His version is a dark, powerful steppers with a trance-like bassline and drums, flute melody and a lot of atmospheric sounds. It is very gloomy, meditative and so massive at the same time, just perfect for for a meditation under the wall of 18” subs.

Mungo’s Hi-Fi remixed “Stay Calm” with YT vocals, basing the tune on the part of bass and – primarily – on drums beating out the rhythm like a slow heartbeat. Some melodies of leads and synths are showing gently through the strong vocal of YT. There’s no need to say more, just excellent remixes.

From roots to digital bass vibes – Mungo’s Hi-Fi

From roots to digital bass vibes – Mungo’s Hi-Fi

These 4 records, released at the end of 2015, come in a different flavour. Two of them came out in Scotch Bonnet label and they proof Mungo’s love to classic rub-a-dub. They recorded Johnny’s Osbourne hit “Ice Cream Love” with Johnny himself but also with Prince Fatty’s live band. This name is for me synonymous with beautiful sound and so it is with this one – the riddim sounds warm and rootical with a little bit of modern flavour. On the second version Johnny’s voice is paired with excellent vocal of YT.

Two next 12” releases came out in Scrub A Dub label and brings digital deep vibes.  Here Mungo’s invited dubstep master from Croatia – Egoless and Vital Techniques & Mickey B, who remixed Squarewave’s “Police officer” and Mungo’s Hi-Fi and YT – “Boomsound”. These killer bangers will satisfy all lovers of modern bass music!

MUNGO’S HI FI (Glasgow, UK)

Mungo’s Hi Fi first set sail at the turn of the millennium – a time when soundsystem culture was at low tide in the Clyde estuary. They had to dig deep into reggae dancehall heritage to distill its essence, avoiding mimicry like the plague and always keeping it real. The example of soundsystem pioneers showed the way – using the latest technology to build on the past, conscious of the current climate.

The digital age has brought on a storm of musical offerings making it hard for music lovers to navigate a safe course. Mungo’s Hi Fi shine a light in the darkness.

As the good ship Mungo grew, so did the crew. Seven now make up the permanent company, each with their own responsibilities for producing and releasing the music, running the label, shop, playing live shows and putting on promotions. Together with a hard working crew of MCs, box lifters and visual artists they work as a team, relying on all their strengths and not just strong personalities that can cause a sound to run aground. They have been on adventures all over the globe, sometimes travelling alone, sometimes with the whole crew.

At sea you learn self reliance, how to keep a positive attitude and how to have fun. They maintain a suspicion of cultural pirates and their abuse of power, which is why they choose to retain control over how they make and present their music, favouring passion over presentation.

When counter currents start to challenge the mainstream they will always meet opposition. As the tide begins to swell they are ready to batten down the hatches and provide a beating heart for those who battle injustice with the power of love and the human spirit. In order to stop complaining and start competing they have had to face their own fears and private opposition, get organised and fight back. In this serious time war is not the answer as only love can conquer.

ROOTS MELODY ( Pabianice)

Kolektyw ten powstał w 2011 roku, w Pabianicach by szerzyć rootsową wibrację, której podstawą jest równość i brak jakichkolwiek uprzedzeń. W rok później, bo 2012 owocem ciężkiej pracy stanęła ścianka głośników. Roots Melody, to korzenna roots reggae, dub, UK dub selekcja i forma grania zainspirowana soundsystemowymi mistrzami z Wielkiej Brytanii i Jamajki. Silne brzmienie basu i perkusji, to również wiadomość w rub-a-dubowym stylu na mikrofonie. A przede wszystkim, to ludzie którzy wspierają tę misję, poruszając swoimi ciałami w rytm muzyki.
